Do you travel peak time? If you do it is probably best to get a season ticket.

The Family and Friends Railcard that Sassy mentions is a great card, BUT it requires a minimum of 1 adult and 1 adult to be travelling.
The alternative railcards would be 16-25 (So if you are 16-25 or a full time mature student) this has a minimum fare before 10am of £12 Mon - Fri (Excl bank hols)
The other is a Senior Railcard (60+)
There is also a Disabled Railcard that you could apply for subject to meeting the criteria.

Railcards however do not obtain further discounts on season tickets.

It really is, we can get up to 60% off childrens rail fares, which is wicked :D

    Family Railcard

Although I don't personally get 50% off fares, when we all travel, it works out around 50% on a lot of trips, although can sometime sbe a little more.

If you intend to use the train a lot, a rail card is a good way forward
    Ah...

So that wouldn't really be suitable for someone planning a commute.

Highly unlikely the OP will be taking his children (or even one child) to work with him, is it?

But thanks for taking the time to post.

No, I guess not, hence why I said to look at rail cards in general :D

I wish there were a rail card that offered 50% off for the solo traveller, think most people would have one

Remember the split ticket Martin was on about before, might be worth a look, specially if you can plan a head!

Some links you may want to refer to:

http://www.railcard.co.uk - The main railcard site will link you to the appropriate card mentioned in this topic for further information.
http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk - This is the train company you will likely be travelling with from Gloucester to Bristol

If you are only travelling from Gloucester to Bristol OP, what about doing spilt ticketing, as I think you would gain by doing this - although you would need to advance book a good month in advance and book the whole months tickets.

Another ideal, if you drive, driving there could be cheaper, or getting a cheap run about to get to Bristol and back??

No. Splitting on this journey will not make a saving.

    Really?

There are no Advance Singles ever available for that journey.

Not sure there would be anywhere worthy of splitting for that particular route as it's not an intercity route - which tends to be where splitting works. Still worth a look however. Do note if you go for a split ticket this can sometimes reduce the amount of trains you would be able to get as your train would have to stop at the station where the tickets swap over.

If it was me I'd be driving, Gloucester to Bristol is next to no distance to be honest, down the motorway and your there!

    How about a ride share?
I never go near that way otherwise I would have offered.

But others must be going into Bristol from Gloucester?

I think the OP has already explored driving... or more to the point... parking.

    See here.

    Ahhhhh I see.

    A car share??

Just to point out, by Bristol Temple Meads there is a car park, not in anyway linked to the rail company, offering parking at a discounted rate.

I think it is £6 for the whole day, it's right next door to BTM
