Help - broken laptop screen!

  • You could Ebay yours for spares, offsetting anything gained (maybe £75?) against a new laptop.

Withholding pocket money for the next 3 years will pay for a new laptop!

Actually that's not getting lucky it's called fraud and it's against the law and against the ethos of this site.

I thought the site was dedicated to money saving?.... yep here it is 'moneysavingexpert.com' certainly looks like money saving to me.
Believe me IT companies are not stupid they have seen it all before and usually will only accept a warranty upgrade at point of purchase and it looks a little fishy registering a late warranty and immediately claiming on it

The OP might be more intelligent than you give them credit for. The OP might have considered this and decided to wait a month of two before claiming ;) Also, I look at it like this, the company concerned sold a laptop at an inflated price, they certainly made a profit on its sale. Likewise they allow their warranties to be sold seperately instead of at point of sale. As you say companies aren't stupid, or perhaps they think people might purchase a warranty and not use it? Anyway, what I do know is it's been done successfully on other forums this way, so theres a good chance it shall continue to work.
Does your household policy even have a no-claims bonus? it's probably going to be the best option to claim on the insurance policy you have rather than take questionable advice.

Are you sure this advice fits in with the 'ethos' of this site ie: moneysavingexpert.com. Or have you just sugested the OP lose their 'no claims' discount?
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.
  • Surely the money you would receive for the Laptop on your insurance would be more than you would lose in no claims discount????
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

Unfortunately I have discovered that portable computing equipment is excluded from our house contents insurance. So that removes that dilemma. (We have a £100 excess and 5 years no claims)

The warranty advertised on ebay costs £89, and correct me if Im wrong but there are no details on ebay of what it actually covers.

Current thinking is to try and find someone cheaper to replace the screen but its not looking good.
  • can understand your reluctance to go and do it yourself.

however this company seem to do acer screens and charge £25 an hour for labour, there is no way that changing a screen should take more than an hour

they also have a number to call for other models

Details of the AcerAdvantage warranty here.

Note that registration must be within 90 days from date of laptop purchase for warranty with accidental cover, and surcharge for screen breakage.

Help, my lovely shiny laptop is bust. A small child trod on the screen and shattered it (I know, dont ask)

Seems beyond economic repair as the cheapest price we have been quoted to replace the (14") screen is £300+VAT which still leaves us with a laptop with a slightly bent case. Laptop only cost us £380 about 3 months ago from Acer. Acer have been useless quoting £41 just to look at it and 6-8week turnaround time. I was wondering whether there would be any mileage in asking them to "trade it in" for a new one.

We have accidental damage cover on house contents, slightly reluctant to claim and lose no claims discount but maybe this is the best option.

    Any other ideas?

not read all of this thread but when this happened to me when my mates dog walked over my laptop and broke the screen, he claimed off his house insurance saying that he sat on it. Might be worth looking into if u have house insurance :)
