Free gas no more! Am I in trouble?

My girlfriend and I moved into a one bedroom flat in June 2005 and when we rang to find out who supplied our gas we were told that nobody did. So, we've been using it and not paying for it for a year. Now we've got a letter from xoserve saying that we have to get a supplier.

Who should we change to and are we going to have to pay for the gas we've used?

    New one to me Stamford....http://www.energywatch.org.uk/bst/help_and_advice/links/index.asp

...only fair to pay what you have used. xoserve will probably back date the connection anyway, once you give them a suppliers name, assuming you are accepted as a customer.. Have you had only the one notification.
  • Just remember you dont get anything for nothing in this world.
You must have realised that you would have to pay in the end, hope you have saving up to pay your bill.

Depends where you live and what you use as to who you use as your supplier, go to uswitch to help you decide.

About the gas you have already used, why shouldn't you pay for it, you used it
  • Do not panic...!

You are in effect a "shipperless site" ...it basically means you were receiving gas without a provider. You now have to because XoServe have realised this.

You now have a choice of energy provider and I would sincerely consider shopping around for the best prices for you. Dual Fuel with any provider will always be cheaper than having gas with one and elec with another.

Your "nominated/chosen" supplier cannot bill you for the gas already supplied as they were not supplying...they can only bill you from the date of transfer. Just please be sure to pass on a meter reading date on the day they start!

    Hope that helps!

As the cost of cases such as this fall indirectly on the public and the shareholders by being factored in to increased charges made or reduced dividends, I think there is a case for addtional regulations that usage be billed and charged at the rate of the regional supplierl. However it comes about, no one deserves a free lunch.
  • Hi guys

Actually you are wrong im afraid to say, you have been stealing gas for the last year, you knew that there was no providor now you have been caught out, you will be back charged, most likley it was a new build that you moved into, it is your responsability to register, dont be suprised to have a large bill, they may allow you to set up a long term arrangement. And please dont tell porkies < not saying you will > about the opening readings on the meter it will be registerd on the xoserve systems just not sent to the suppliers, if you give the wrong info you will get a visit from a revenue protection, in sevear cases you can get cut off! so be warned..

< ok i just read what I put and I have come across a little strong..but it does annoy the hell out of me when people moan when they get caught out, so sorry for being blunt >

    Wrong....

The new company will prob have to register a new Mprn number for the supply to your property. That supplier can only bill you from the date that mprn is shown to be supplied by them. Happens all the with us for gas and elec customer... Dont worry about it

God i hate someone who knows alittle knowledge and applys it to everything....this is not correct a new meter ref number will not be issued as there already one there, as the meter would not be installed without it. please take my word for it I deal with this every day of the week monday to Friday 8 hours a day..

Guys if ya going to give info please check that you are right..

If you go to Uswitch or Energywatch you will be able to compare the dual fuel rate and the only gas or only electricity rate. I have BG as my electricity supplier and Ebico for my gas, it has worked out cheaper this way for me, until last year (prior to price hikes) had a dual fuel account, just shop around and double check that the rates the comparaison sites give you are correct!

I work for one of the largest gas and elec company in the uk and have done for a number of years in loads of department, eg call centre, debt, metering, SME also have delt with a large number of new connections.. i also deal with this every day. How do you know it has an Mprn number without looking on the Transco Database. With any newfix the gas supplier has to make an Mprn number and register it with transco.. Elec its the other way around... Mpas will Make the Mpan number and give it to the customer. By the looks of it there cant be a mprn number attached to the property or it is a dead mprn number. In that case a new one will have to be rasied and registered to a suppiler. That can NOT be back dated..... Trust me meters get installed with out Mprn numbers being raised all the time. im not saying that you wont be charged but you would be very unlucky if you did
