  • Period feature. Keep if you can, it might increase the value of the house.

But if you really do not like them, rip them out.

:D don't see many plate rails these days, but being brought up in a Victorian house that had them (that I still own but no longer live in) twas obvious to me, but I expect as most people have not come across them before they are a bit of an oddity! I had them in the last house I owned too but never put anything on them just left them looking like picture rails!

Bit strange this one IMO.Here in Sussex it was never "a period feature", they were always known as Picture rails used for just that hanging pictures from, rarely do you see one with a piece of 3" wide timber placed on the top for plates.Personally I would take off the wide top but leave the picture rail.....IMO looks hideous with plates on:D

Dado rails/chair rails were normally about 36" from the floor ,principle being to protect the walls from the furniture.

I'm in two minds about it - even if it was to stay I wouldn't be putting anything on it -so it would be a dust-trap.

Ah well, early days still... need the sale to actually go through!

I hope it all goes through for you :)

By the time you've done all your buying and moved in and everything you might not have time to think about them for a while, maybe live with them for a bit and see if you can put up with them?
I like - them I bet in the right colour and using the right paint they'd look really good.
