Is this still classed as a picture rail?

Current owners seem to be using it as shelving :-/

Leave or remove?

VERY good point! Oooph the dust that must be gathered up there.
But what exactly is it? Shelf or Picture rail??

No its a plate rack. There is a groove horizontally along the front edge to stop the plates sliding off. You'll prolly find that the bottom of the moulding doubles as a picture rail though.

    Lovely original feature.

Certainly leave it in place IMHO.

For display not storage. Not dining plates.

Entertainment. Oh no. I was being a bit cruel earlier over the sink but with this I'm serious. Feel along the top of the rack. You'll find the groove I was talking about. Heres another one

The dining plates comment was in response to your question about putting plates so high up. Not for storage of eating plates for showing dispay plates. Very common in the past and (IMHO) you could well ruin the visual perspective of the room if you remove them. But it would be up to you of course.

Personally I'd leave it. 'Out of sight, out of mind' would be my first thought on the dust (from a house bachelor).

Dado rails on the other hand are nuisance.

Besides, I can never look at one without smiling.
