I sent cheque but seller is saying they haven't received it!

........and I know they have!! I bid and won 2 dvds and I think the seller thought they didn't get enough! I sent the cheque and I know they have it as they would have started a NPB Dispute and not gone further with it! icon8.gif So now I will probably get kicked off ebay - I was late paying that was because the seller hadn't contacted me with regards to an outstanding question that I asked and said response needed urgently to pay for item! - the seller wasn't happy cos was charging £3 p&p for each dvd and I know it is £1.50 at the most!! so asked to combine the 2! - she eventually replied with I can have the 2 for £4.00 P&P! I agreed and sent the payment - now I get this!! icon8.gif although I can't prove anything! the seller has not persisted with the dispute! - although they still can!! icon8.gif

What can I do! icon5.gif

You should be able to go into your bank, possibly ring them up (not that sure if you can do it over the phone because of identification etc), and stop the cheque.

Yes I can but the cheque is for £11.50 and to stop a cheque they charge you £10! The seller hasn't yet cashed in the cheque its a case of pretending you haven't received it and putting the items back on ebay to get more money!!!

Angelcake, very few banks charge if the cheque has been lost, they only charge if you just decide to cancel the cheque on a whim.

Give the bank a call, most have call centres open on a Sunday, explain the cheque is lost in the post and you are unhappy about issuing a second one until the first one is cancelled.

AS for getting kicked off ebay, you need three strikes for that so as long as you are careful in the future you will be OK.

Hi Soo, I already have one strike from when I first started on ebay and didn't know what i was doing! This is for 2 seperate transactions from the saem person so that makes 2 more! icon9.gif I will be gutted for getting kicked off for this when I have genuinely sent the money! icon9.gif

    Angelcake,

The three strikes have to come from three unique users, so his 2 will only count as an additional one.

However, you still have time to avoid the problem, call him up on the phone, explain you will cancel the cheque and send another. Even if he files for NPB today he cannot finalise that for another 7 days which gives you plenty of time to arrange another cheque.

Risking your second strike on this is not worth it, make sure you get a payment to him somehow, send a cheque recorded if necessary then if he does file for NPB you can prove delivery of payment and probably avoid the strike.

Don't let this one slide, 2 strikes on your account would make it very difficult for you in the future. Just imagine if you started to sell as a business using this account and had a mishap later after getting hundreds of positives and *then* lost the account.

I would suggest not bidding on auctions where you don't want to to pay the stated P&P. If you want to the seller to send the two items as one package, ask before bidding not after.

Everyone knows that some sellers are bumping up the sales price in the P&P, if you don't like it, don't bid.

Anyway, £3 P&P for a DVD is not too bad depending on how it is sent. You are looking at £1.40 for postage (first class recorded), before you get to the cost of the packaging and handling.

Which is why it is sensible to have a selling account and a separate 'disposable' buying account.

I would have paid the £3 per dvd, if I was that against it I would have not bid! - I asked just cos it seemed a bit steep and every bit counts! icon7.gif If you don't ask.........

Just cos everyone knows people bump up the prices - doesn't make it right! icon8.gif Obviously you condone this! £3 per DVD is bad! I sell them too sometimes! icon8.gif I always manage to get the costs around £1.50 to £2.00. I didn't have time to email the person before bidding cos I only came across the auction near the end!

Thanks soolin, I shall email them and see what they suggest! - they don't take paypal!

Angelcake, don't leave this up to the seller, ultimately it is your responsibility to ensure that he receives payment.

Cancel the original cheque as lost and send another one today for the full amount but send this by recorded delivery. Then e mail the seller and tell him what you have done. Even send him the tracking number so he can see you are genuinely trying to pay.

I can't see you gain anything by asking the seller for more help, all he can suggest really is another cheque.

  • (as Altarf already said) Don't bid on items you are not happy with - everyone agrees that bumping up p&p prices is wrong - but if you then bid on the item you are agreeing a contract with the seller, if you are successful, on the terms stated, not those that you will negotiate afterwards.

Think about it from the sellers point of view. You put up 2 dvds for sale and say each one would be £3 p&p the price people are prepared to bid should be affected by the p&p so they will be alright with it. You sell the dvd's and expect the money and someone is emailing you about p&p and combining items when you are expecting the money - you have plenty of chance to ask questions during bidding - when you have won pay up!
    Always on the lookout
