I suppose it boils down to the fact that there are millions and millions of cats, dogs, guinea pigs etc but only a small minority of people will need a place in a care home.

I think there are about 0.5 million elderly people currently in residential care homes (including nursing and basic elderly care)
This figure doesn't include those who reside in sheltered accomodation.

There are also, I understand, getting on for almost 2 million individuals who receive home care (inclusion of which I think would be appropraite for such a forum section)

These figures will continue to rise as (a) the population rises and (b) we all are living longer.

When someone requires care, the chances are it doesn't just affect that individual but has an impact on all of their immediate family so you could easily take that 2.5 million of those directly affected and multiply it by 4 or 5.

If you don't think a section that currently could affect 20% of our entire population is important, fine, but I guess those 20% may think otherwise, especially in view of the horrendous cost effect those services may incur.

If there is a need for a forum on pets I'm sure there is also a need for a forum on care of the elderly on here?

There isnt a forum on chocolate but more people eat that than will go into care. ;)
The minority of people requiring this type of care is growing year after year and it will continue to grow.

Its a minority that only affects a single digit proportion of the population.

No-one is saying it shouldnt be discussed but it is a subject that covers multiple areas. If its the financial products side of it then you will find posters who can answer that in the financial sections. Other posters in the health/medical sections tend to stick in there and wont visit the financial etc etc.

As it currently stands and the way I see it, if you want a care related question then post in that section. If you want a financial related question then post in that section. That way you get the best people answering the questions.

If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

    Thanks Dunstonh,
So for future reference can you advise me where I should post the following issues that arise when it comes to elderly care, bearing in mind that most of them have to be addressed at the same time?
NHS Continuing Care, NHS nursing contributions , Adult services contributions to Care home fee,s, POA, Court of Protection, sale of home to fund care home fees, benefits for people going into care home ,the effects on occupational pension, savings, insurance, benefits for spouse remaining in the marital home,. Choosing a care home ie Nursing , residential, Warden controlled, changing joint ownership to tenants in common, revising wills after partner goes into care home, top up fee,s,effects of equity release when going into a care home but application to Court of Protection has not yet been approved. Vascular or Senile Diementia, Cognivity, incontinence, dysphasia, Respite care,Terminal illness, Carers issues, Advice for people who want to plan ahead for these circumstances?

I also like chocolate but if I liked it too much I would post one thread asking where the nearest weight watchers was in my area ;)

AGE UK will later this year have a forum on it's website. As a specialist older people's organisation I would imagine that most of the issues cavework mentions will come up there.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Age UK is very helpfull but sometimes its nice to just talk to people who are or have been in the same position.
CAB and the benefits office also give advice on their websites for people who post questions here, unrelated to care of the elderly, although I,m not sure about chocolate :D

As quite a large proportion of those going into care homes will be suffering from dementia I can recommend the Azheimer's forum alzheimers.org.uk. This is a wonderful site with lots of information.

Thanks for everyones replies. It really is a minefield at a time when you are at your most vunerable.
I can see both sides of the reasoning for and against creating a forum just for this subject
Thanks to advice from people on MSE I am only now, 3 months down the line aware of NHS continuing care!
Have been in touch with the local PCT today about my Fathers initial assesment ,which he failed.
I was never informed about it or the fact that I could appeal and ask for a full assessment, just told Adult Care would be covering some of the costs and to go off , find a Nursing home and get a top up
Off to find the relevant threads on here
