TBH I am not sure which forum to post in.
I do know that placing someone you love in a Nursing or Residential home is one of the most stressfull things that you have to deal with in life and something a lot of people have to face at very short notice.
The subject covers benefits , fee,s Continual health care .. a whole load of issues
I may be wrong but I think this subject should become one of the forums on MSE. Somewhere when people find themselves in this position they can access immediately instead of having to search
It,s just a suggestion.

I have to agree with you there. When my mother was placed in a care home following a stroke a few years back we were lucky to have a really helpful social worker. Not everyone might be that fortunate.I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

Thanks Mary .. It is just one very fast decision you have to make. In my case my Father was moved to the home before I could even understand the financial implications.
This really is an important issue and I do think MSE could really help when people find themselves in this position0 -
This is a good board for the CHC / fees part of it! If you search you'll find some very useful threads on it.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Thanks Sue , just wondering if the subject could be put on here as one of the forums .
All the relevant advice and other peoples experiences could then be under one subject..
Benefits , Adult Social Care contributions, effects on partner still living at home, continual health care assesment, areas to aproach for top up fees, checking out residential and Nursing homes,POA and becoming a DWP appointee if its required
It is a huge topic.0 -
I'll move this to Site Suggestions because the team would need to make a decision on a new forum.Signature removed for peace of mind0

If people do find they need help and advice on this subject, but are not as fortunate as you were in having a helpful social worker allocated to them, could I suggest they may like top contact Age UK (formally known as Age Concern) who can offer good advice on care homes, where to get further information as well as any welfare benefits that may be applied for. This can be for nursing homes or simple residential homes for the elderly."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
The pensions/retirement section frequently gets posts on the subject. Mainly as people get concerned with estate planning and avoiding deprivation of assets. Plus, the usual ways of funding involve financial products.
Its one of those areas that really falls across a few forums and not just one. Personally, I dont think the subject would generate enough posts by itself to have its own forum. Plus, if it does you run the risk of people who currently responsd to those threads in the existing forums no longer responding as they wont necessarily check out a dedicated forum. I know I wouldnt.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -
Dunstonh, I have posted yet another ongoing query that many people face regarding one parent going into a Nursing home while one remains in the marital home..
I have posted it on the 50,s forum because I still do not know where else I should ask the question..
The fact that you or ' others' would not "check out a dedicated forum" does not take into consideration the amount of people who actually find themselves in this position , needing advice at short notice and a fast response.. they should not need to have to do searches for an answer to the million and one questions that have to be dealt with when it comes to decisions about elderly relatives going into care..
If there is a need for a forum on pets I'm sure there is also a need for a forum on care of the elderly on here?0 -

I suppose it boils down to the fact that there are millions and millions of cats, dogs, guinea pigs etc but only a small minority of people will need a place in a care home......................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

The minority of people requiring this type of care is growing year after year and it will continue to grow.0
