What would I do if if floods similar to the curent Pakistani experience, or other recent 'natural' disasters, wiped out all our normal expectations of life?
1. I'd come in on here and drag this thread up.
2. Buy a boat.
3. Put my house on the market boastinf sea views.

I'm sure if the International community got together it would be possible to distribute fresh water and aid via air at short notice. This is one I prepared earlier for Haiti. Even if there is not enough capacity surely you could provide them with something to mix with the infected water they do have to kill any bacteria.0

Where do you live? Are there any newspapers or radio staions down your way?
A floods a flood which ever way you dress it,people died, lost houses in Cumbria perhaps not on the scale of Pakistan.
As for the president of Pakistan, perhaps him and son should have quit poncing round the UK whilst this disaster was unfolding.Official MR B fan club, dont go............................0 -

Not at all. What is the point of you or me worrying about it? None!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
There would have been no water and no electricity. There would have been no sewerage either because it's pumped electrically.
I'd have thought there's be only only too much sewage, then (-:...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
A big difference between developed world and developing world is that here everyone (including numpties) get basic amenities (sometimes via benefits) which make people not fighting for food/shelter etc.
In a giant natural calamity, many people will lose their fundamental necessities. Then they will start fighting i.e. looting from those who have those.
In long time back, welfare state scheme as started for this very reason and at that time only a fraction of whole population used to be on dole. But over the time, the whose scheme has been misused to death.
When people have nothing to lose, they become desperate. That's the reason we see so many illegal immigrants entering the country hanging around landing gears of aeroplanes or over fuel tank of lorries.
This is the reason why balance of population is essential. This requires long term vision which our politicans lack of.
If you want an example of how otherwise disciplined British citizens behave, just try to board a tube in London underground, during peak office hours, when few trains were cancelled. Either you need to push some fellow passengers via your elbow or you'll stand still on platform till peak hour is over
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -
Doesn't the UK have some sort of secret disaster plan to deal with such an event?
There was that 70s UK film about the UK being hit by a few Russian nuclear bombs. I've seen a few clips from it on YouTube. One home-owner was complaining and very reluctant when a police officer ordered him to take in a few homeless people.
Seems reasonable to me - especially if you filled your quota early out of desperate homeless people... displaced (who otherwise seem law abiding and decent) looking for temporary shelter/home.0 -
Do you all know something I don't? Our neighbourhood (that I know about, could be that everyone got a copy) got sent a govt booklet a few weeks ago about being prepared for disaster?
I'll look at it again when i get home, I flicked through it initially and remember reading about getting copies of important paperwork and putting it in a safe place
There were other bits I can't remember atm.Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0
