UK Floods, panic ensues

What would happen here if floods similar to the curent Pakistani experience, or other recent 'natural' disasters, wiped out all our normal expectations of life?

It'd be every man for himself.

That's why I don't want a house on a flood plain, or even on the edge of one.

I'd emigrate, and then resume normal service.

If you remember, a few years back, we had severe flooding in the lower Severn valley and many people had to rely on water bowsers for safe drinking water.

I seem to recall that emergency water in the supermarkets disappeared in hours and some helpful souls drained the bowsers or peed in them. :(

Does that answer your question? :)

totally with you on that score PN. I very nearly bought one sandwiched between a river and a canal. The agents were very keen to point out that the area had never flooded when nearby Thatcham did 3 years ago. Point is that Thatcham flooded due to poor drainage and large scale house building, not the river bursting its bank.

My solicitor said to look at house buildiings insurance. Sure enough touted round for quotes and it was the sucking of air through the teeth syndrome - Ooh, well, the house is in the red area on the Environment Agency website. Sorry, can't help you.

Another one wanted a report from the EA to show the likelihood of flooding. If I'd got one of those, I'd be turned down anyway due to the house's position.

So I pulled out of the purchase of that one. Glad in a way as I would have been on edge each time it rained.

The estate agents will tell you that the sellers existing insurers have to offer you cover - but at what price?
Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j

I'm assuming you mean the rest of the UK population (which is actually about 60,000,000) - I guess some would emigrate, luckily we are in the EU so they could go to poland and take the locals jobs :) anyone left behind would just have to eat mud and drink worm juice, but thats up to them.
  • As I thought, the effect on the price of your property would be your first concern.
