Try changing the IDE cable. Take the one from the CD drive and plug it into the Hard Drive.

Still not recognised in the BIOS boot order once you changed the cable?

I meant it didn't start up. I've looked and the primary IDE master is maxtor 4D0404H2 :)

When I click on it, the only thing I can change is Type: user/auto. It's currently auto

    Buy something similar to this,

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Generic-Hard-Disk-Drive-160GB/dp/B000OUI8OQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1282417272&sr=8-1

reinstall windows, then attach old one as a slave to see if you can get any data off.

Are there any other peripherals currently attached to the PC?

So you changed the cable, restarted and.....

... I changed the cable, restarted it and the sam message flashed up. I went into the IDE config, and saw the master had changed. I've restarted again and put a usb stick in it, and it flashes up, but the message is still the same.

Once you changed the cable, did you check as to whether it was listed in the Boot priority screen?

Is S.M.A.R.T switched on in the BIOS?

I've just checked and there are now 3 things in boot screen priority. In order 1st: Rem dev 2nd: ATAPT CD-ROM 3rd: Hard drive.

When I clicked on Hard drive disk in boot, it says Samsung HM R0JC

I cannot see S.M.A.R.T in any of the screens

Have you changed Hard Drive to the 1st in the order?
