it maybe that the boot device has been deselected , go into the bios and check the boot order and that the drive is selected.

Nothing to do with boot device order, the computer has already said it can't find a hard disk full stop (let alone one with a boot record).

if its detected in the bios it shows the drive isnt fubard. If it doesnt detect you wont get the data back even in a caddy. Should know Im a MCSE qualified engineer. It can also be effected by the boot order, if its set to boot only from certain devices

When I go into main and bios, I can only change the system time.

When I go to boot it says:

    silent boot [enabled]
    quick boot [enabled]

boot device priority - when I enter the menu it has:
    1st boot device [removable dev]
    2nd boot device [atapi cd-rom]

    removable devices

1st removable device [1st floppy drive]

    atapi cd-rom drives

    1si atapi cdrom [samsung cdrw/dvd sm-33]

The drive isn't being detected though, that's why the OP has the error message they stated in their first post.

once you install an OS and the drivers on it, yes. However, as stated earlier, the chances of pulling any data off the old one are slim at best

Ah, well seen as the CD drive doesn't work so I couldn't install an OS. I guess that means a new PC! Anyone know where I could pick up a cheap one for £100- £150 at a real push? I'll keep the keyboard and monitor from this one. Actually, I should make a new thread...

THANK YOU to everyone that tried to help x

Oh maybe it could be fixed then. It's a Dell Dimension 4500. I'd have to buy a new OS too as it was pre-installed.

**edit** I've just remembered, I have an old Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop with a fried motherboard. could I switch the dvd drives?
