Is it worth it?

My sister-in-law died recently on clearing the house we found an old building society passbook (Leeds Permanent) it had £21.50 in it, is it woth going through the dormant account process? -how much is it likely to be worth? book is dated 1982.

Its worth it so the banks or the tax office don't take any more of money that they aren't entitled to...

I'm sure your SIL would have wanted every last penny to have been distributed amongst her loved ones.

You might find that it is a closed account if the passbook was reported lost. But still worth trying. The Leeds Permanent was taken over by Halifax

I read in a newspaper that if you don't claim dormant account money it was going to be used by the new coalition government for some kind of urban regeneration scheme to tart up parts of Merseyside and other such down and out places.

pmduk is correct, the Leeds Permanent Building Society merged with the Halifax - not to be confused with the Leeds Building Society, formerly the Leeds and Holbeck Building Society, a quite separate organisation. You could either do the Dormant Account Searches as detailed on this site (which may of course bring up details of other "lost accounts) or just contact Halifax.

I suspect that it won't be worth much more than what the book shows; interest rates on book accounts tend to be derisory.
