My in laws never charged a penny to their youngest daughter. She still lives at home aged 22, 4 month pregnant, bailed out from debt several times by bank of mom&dad, moans how she should be entitled to a better life, and has no savings (or means of supporting the baby after birth, apart from benefit which you and I contribute).
  • Never charged my Lads a penny untill this year 24 & 19
oldest earns around £300 a week youngest around £200 we take £100 and £50 respectively per month, and feel guilty at doing this
More often than not i end up giving back more than this :T:T
Charge her FAIR and realistic rent from the off
We are no example of how to do things and if I had my time again I would do this It hasnt taught my boys nothing but hey-ho not long now til they are gone !!!!!!!!!!
    I wish
    all the best

£140 a month insnt bad , i wouldnt got up as far as £100 a week but perhaps £60 a week as that is the standard room in a house kind of rate

i agree with mx5 about saving anything extra over what you need to charge to give back to her

Sorry cannot agree that £140 a month isnt bad, its £35 a week. In a four week month, less in 5 I could not keep another person for this amount.

she gives me £140 a month for her keep,
F00k me, I was paying my parents more than that 28 years ago....you gotta a spare room?
Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.
  • When i started working (back in 1992) my take home pay was less than £430 a month, £100 of that went straight to my mum for my keep every month so a substantial chunk of my earnings was gone before i saw it, I thought I was hard done by but it did teach me to be more responsible with money. Personally Id be looking at charging her maybe £70 a week which seems to be the going rate round here for a room in a house share, I think she currently has a v cushy number at the mo with no responsibility or care for anything but spending her money on having a good time! oooooooh I wish :o) lol

she doesn`t save at all, and never has any money left at the end of the month, she doesn`t do anything in the house eith, as she is out every evening and at weekends, she buys clothes, dvds, cd`s etc. My husband has just had a cut in his hours which now means he will lose about £139 a week, roughly £420 a month, he was on low wages to start with, and I only work part time, so we really need the extra money, I think £240 sounds about right, but she probably wont agree !

Have you sat down with her and been open about your finances?
At the very least she should want to help you with your debts.

  • i left home 4yrs ago and was paying £30 a week. although if i went shopping with my mum she would prob spend this on me.
my brother is 19 and doesnt pay a penny or do anything in the house earns about £700 a month. but my mum doesnt want him to leave and she knows if she starts charging him board he will just find a room to rent at a mates.

i cant believe how much some of you charge ur kids i dont know anyone that pays more then £140 a month to there parents (and they dont do anything around the house etc) im quite shocked i cant bare to think i would charge my son that much. i choose to have children so i expect to support him always!
