Freesat from Sky

Wonder if anyone can help.

I am due to cancel all my Sky products apart from Sky+ so that I can record and pause live TV. I will be paying £10 a month for that service.

I was hoping that I would then, with my old viewing cards in my Sky boxes, be able to see all Freesat channels from Sky. Apparently not. After speaking to Sky, I will still need to buy a Freesat card from Sky for £25 to be able to view Freesat from Sky.

If I don't buy the card, what channels will I be able to view from my Skyboxes with the original viewing card?

I am also wondering what the cheapest option would be. Sky is becoming to expensive for me. I really want a service where I can view some satellite channels for eg Sky news and be able to record and pause without paying a monthly subscription.

You have been misinformed an ex sub card becomes a Freesat from Sky card. And if you are still paying for the Sky + recording facility you will need you original card anyway.

To see what you will get without a card take it out.

The cheapest long term would be to get a Freesat PVR about £250 and no subscription. However Sky News is not on the Freesat EPG but can be added in non-Freesat mode, though you may not be able to record and pause while in non-Freesat mode.

After 2 years of £10 per month to Sky, for the privilege of RECORDING PROGRAMMES, you'll have spent £240. I'd rather spend that £240 on a Humax Foxsat HDR, giving you HD (which you won't get with Sky) and recording, for no further cost. If you connect it to your broadband connection, you can also watch iPlayer on it, with other 'catch up' services 'coming soon'.
If you're worried about certain channels, look up the Freesat website to find out what's available.
