Minor TV problem

I'm sure a very simple solution is required but technology is not my strong point!
I've just moved house and the TV cable from the old place wouldn't connect to the wall so I needed a homemade one with 'male' ends on both sides, one for tv and one for wall. The TV comes on now but it says 'no signal' and it's a black screen with no picture at all.
It's a 22" HD ready digital LCD tv with built-in DVD player.

Does the property actually have a TV aerial?
The connector at the wall may not actually be connected to an aerial.0 -
A lot of new builds over the past 10-15 years have been precabled/fitted with multiple wall sockets but no TV aerial - you will probably find the end of the cable(s) neatly(??) bundled up in the loft space; certainly the case with both my daughter's house purchases. The builders claim it is because so many buyers prefer to arrange Virgin cable or Sky satellite.0

As above.
Plus if you have moved far, or your new property is aligned to a different transmitter try retuning the TV using new installation, most TVs will not do this automatically and will behave as you stated when the chosen channel is not present.0
