Recommendations for an alternative cheese please?

Hiya

Hope some of you can help.

I love cathedral city cheese However when its not on offer its so flaming expensive and doesnt last very long as the blocks arent very big.

Can any one recommend an alternative preferably one you can buy by weight over the counter or even a home brand pre packaged one. We are a family of 5 soon to be 6 so as you can imagine if we have cheese on toast or sandwiches, cheese doesnt last very long in this house :-)

Thank you :)

  • Do you have a freezer? I find CC freezes very well :)

  • Aldi's Mature own brand one is suprisingly nice.
Colliers is also nice when it's on offer.
Try your local market if you've got one - ours has a farm produce stall which sells very reasonably priced tasty cheddar.

Most places which cut the cheese as you buy it will let your try before you buy so you can check you like it.

Probably wont help you but we buy a £20 block of good quality cheddar from CostCo and cut it into CC size blocks and freeze them, we find instead of 2 for £5 CC blocks lasting us a week or two this £20 block lasts us up to six to eight weeks depending on how we use it. We grab a block out the freezer the night before and the next day grate the whole block - ready to be used in a variety of ways, pre-prepared and good to go!

I had forgotten about aldi cheese used to have that years ago i will give it another go :-)

I cant get into costco havent got a card (thats if im thinking of the right place) but i will ask about and see if any one i know has one see they would mind picking me one up next time they go :-)

Ive tried some of the deli cheeses but to be honest the serving staff at the local one hasnt got a clue so i gave up in the end will try again and see if someone with a bit more knowledge is available.

Can you tell im quite picky when it comes to cheese some of it just seems to taste and have the consistancy of plastic.

I always buy the "value" or "basics" cheese for my basic cheesy needs - I always go for the mature or "full flavour" option and find them great for cooking, cheese on toast etc.
  • wykes farm is lovely cheese if you can get it :)
  • Asda's own brand english mature cheddar is currently on offer £2 for 400g and is gorgeous.

Like you we are really fussy about cheese but go through loads due to being cheese fiends and this is on the 'acceptable to buy' list ;)
  • We go for any mature or vintage cheese, whichever is on offer. Watch out for the different size packs too, some only have 370g in these days rather than 400g. I tend to keep at least 4 packs in the fridge, we get through loads!

We get whatever mature cheddar is on offer that week. Currently eating Lake District cheddar which is £2 for 400g at the Co-op and nice cheese.

Agree that Wyke Farms is lovely too.
