Mobile Phone Contracts - Address Issue

Hi there,

I'm having problems taking out a mobile phone contract and was wondering if anyone had any advice.

Essentially; I live in a flat. I'm registered to vote at this address. After several years with Virgin mobile as a pay as you go customer, I decided recently to take up a pay monthly contract (which would work out £30 cheaper a month - on average - when compared with what I pay now).

I've attempted twice to take out the contract, but Virgin seems to believe my address doesn't exist. They have other flat numbers at this address, but not mine. I've been informed that the logistics team will attempt to add my address manually, but I'm wondering what to do if this fails.

I've already changed my bank address - following their advice - to just the building no. street, city and postcode. However, they can't register an account to this address - I have to have a flat number and apparently, my flat doesn't exist.

They have recommended I change my address to my parent's residence (and one perky call centre employee even suggested I bill my parents for the account!), but I've already changed my address once for them and really don't want to mess around with my credit score or bank. Besides, I'm not registered to vote at my old address, so would presumably be rejected anyway.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what to do? Will I have this issue with other phone companies? I could speak to the landlord about registering the address, but he's not the most helpful fellow at the best of times.

Apologies if I've broken any forum rules or anything - first post and I'm happy to edit if I've included something I shouldn't!

  • Hi,

The building address does - but not my flat number - none of the flats show up via the Royal Mail website. Hope this helps?

Youll need to speak to your local council to register the address.

Otherwise you will always have this issue.

  • Hi,

the council are aware of this address - I'm registered to vote here and pay council tax at this address. Is it possible for them to not recognise this address but still include it for voter registration & council tax?

Im not sure to be honest.

However i used to live in new build property so the address never came up on companies systems.

I had to get the council to register the address and then contact Royal Mail on 08456 011 110 option 3 option 1 and ask them to activate the postcode.

Try ringing royal mail on the number above that was department who made sure my address come up on there website etc they may be able to help. As within a few weeks my address started being recognised by companies.

  • Hi stclair,

Just checked this out with the number you suggested and apparently, the council hasn't passed along any records of the property to Royal Mail. I now have to speak with the council about passing council tax/property details along to Royal Mail - thanks for yr help!
