Hi, I use dialup with AOL @15.99 on the telephone line. Lots of deals are with a BT line. Does anyone know of a way to help me reduce my access to the internet. Thanks

my post was dialup related, though #2 also asks a valid question - why cannot you just share your flatemate's connection, and go 50:50 on the monthly cost?

you cannot use any other provicer than telewest or AOL on a Telewest line - it is simple as that unfortunately... unless you get a BT line (not nessisarily from BT - belongs as the operator goes via BT wholesale, like the post office), then your stuck with AOL....

You could in the past but I'm sure now that AOL insist you have a BT line even for dial-up.

I know your question was related to dial-up but you're paying over the odds for a very, very slow connection.

You can get 2mb download with no download limit/caps for £14.99 a month for 12months with Telewest. This is assuming you can't share your friends connection as suggested in an earlier post.

I would recommend only getting their TW's broadband and avoiding their TV and definitely avoiding their Telephone as they are more expensive than their competitors.

TW's broadband is competitive if you're after a truly unlimited download with no caps, etc. If you're not bothered about caps and limitations then there are faster services available for around the same price if you had a BT line.

Having a Telewest line severely limits your choice of the many, many other cheaper suppliers. Not just broadband but cheaper calls and packages, etc.

TW/NTL Telephone services are currently the most expensive telephone provider that I'm aware of - even more expensive than BT's.

i'd imagine you can drop tv... should also be able to drop the phone and get broadband only

but.... as we have all said previously - you are restricted to just Telewest for broadband, period.

OP says they are using AOL dialup on a Telewest landline, so i'd imagine that AOL still allow it
  • Hi,
I also would suggest to share the connection.

All you need is a router and a USB/PCMCIA or PCI wireless card.
For example, this is a complete kit at 43 pounds and very simple to set-up:
