having a reet nightmare trying to change my calls provider.
Just rang BT to tell them I wanted to cancel my calls through them as I was gonna go through Sky instead as you get broadband £5 cheaper than standard price. However I didnt realise that to get 1571 & caller display you have to go through the company that you pay your line rental off. So if i leave BT for that reason they are gonna charge me for 1571 & caller display!??
GAH! is that right? Might as well not bother changing provider for my calls if thats the case as I dont really want to change my line rental provider.

If you are not prepared to contribute to their cashflow why should they offer you 'complimentary' extras? If you want Caller Display then pay for it. No idea why you need 1571. Do most people with new phones not buy one with an answering machine? Or if you have had an old phone for decades then you have had plenty of time to spend a tenner or £15 on a standalone machine.0

Change to a CPS calls provider (Sky is no longer such) so that you can still use the 1280 prefix to make the required 2 calls per month via BT to qualify for free Caller Display.
Please do not even consider using 1571.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I actually like 1571 and BT. I know, spank me until tomorrow and send me to the nearest corner!
Why do I like 1571? It's no different from me phoning my friends who have call waiting etc enabled on their phones (mobiles and otherwise) - Also you do still have the option to hang up if I'm not on the phone as it's a standard 7 rings until it kicks in - I could set an answerphone to less than that. If it does kick in straight away and they leave a message, I can call them straight back when I'm off the phone.0 -

But 1571 is handy if someone needs to leave me a message on my phone. Its free to listen to your messages.0 -
