Also make sure he's registered with the Telephone Preference Service which should cut down on cold calls. In fact never give his number out unless its vital.

Awesome.... so we can all claim our money back at the end of the policy year if we havent claimed?

    Yes fair point FlameCloud.

I suppose what I am getting at is insurances and so forth are a cover against risk and as long as they are not obligatory such as building insurance or car insurance then it is up to the individual if they want them or not.

So it is a decision of the consumer if they want to pay to cover themselves against any future potential costs. The consumer takes that gamble.

There are insurances out there for everything many of which are quite unecessary and many people are being caught out by sharp tactics.

I have cancelled loads of insurance policies in the past that I have decided I no longer wanted just by cancelling my direct debit. I have not even written to the companies. I have not once had any problems after doing this.
  • I had a similar call on Sunday.
They wanted me to take out insurance on my skybox as it was out of waranty.
I politely told the woman on the phone I wasn't interested as I hadnt called her and I thought she was a scam . I then said goodbye and hung up .
She then called me back - I repeated what I had previously said and she then became extreemly abusive , told me to pack up all my equipment - put it outside and she would get an engineer to collect it all .
I then repeated I wasnt interested , hung up and promptly burst into tears .
Usually really inteligent and incontrol but was feeling fairly down that day anyway ( row with teenage daughter) .
After I had stopped crying I rang sky to check - All I can do is praise the guy in India from their customer service dept . It took the poor fella about 15mins to convince me it wasnt legitamate and to stop me crying .
    Feeling very stupid and angry

Yes I also forgot to say there are quite a few scams going around where people are pretending to be from Sky.

    BE VERY CAREFUL.

I had a phonecall where the gent on the other end said he was phoning on behalf of Sky and then started asking what equipment I had! Surely if they were from Sky they would know this. When I challenged him about this he just hung up.

There have been various Sky insurance scams in the past highlighted on MSE

Type Sky scams into google and see what comes up.

Apparantly there is a company that frequently changes its name but has gone under the following names

    SKY REPAIR SERVICE LTD
    SKY REPAIR SERVICES LTD
    SKY REPAIR SERVICES UK LTD
    SKY REPAIR SERVICE UK LTD

Well, it just shows what an idiot she was or she thought you were an idiot.
Once you have SKY installed, the equipments is owned solely by you. SKy or anyone else cannot take it awy from you. It is yours.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
