The insurers will ask who the owner of the vehicle is and also who is the registered keeper. There has to be insurable interest to effect a policy. So if the vehicle belongs to the young driver there is no insurable interest for the parent. In the event of a claim insurers will also investigate ownership and if there is say, finance on the vehicle in the young drivers name, the insurance is likely to be declared void for non-disclosure of a material fact.

If the vehicle belongs to the parent and they insure it in their name and advise insurers that the 17 year old is the main driver then insurers will rate on the 17 year old as that is the risk they are assuming e.g. little experience and more likely to be involved in an accident. So no money saved there.

If the parent tries to insure the vehicle on an any driver basis driving may be restricted to any driver over 25. Insurers are well used to all the tricks employed to try and keep costs down for drivers and quite frankly why should young drivers, (particularly young males who statistically have the most accidents), not have to pay insurers the correct premium for the risk that they are taking in the same way that the rest of us (honest policyholders) do?

Be honest with insurers and make sure you disclose all material facts so that in the event of an accident you will not be worrying about being "found out" and end up uninsured.

My 17 year old son had a similar problem. Eventually went with Quinn and pays just over £3,000 per year on a 1.9Tdi golf mk 3.
Expensive, but at least he will start building a NCD... fingers crossed!

because its not the parent that will be driving the car mainly its the son/daughter.

That's why I added the bit "...and names [the youngster] as main driver"
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.
  • Also in the same boat, 17yr old boy just passed and doing pass plus. The quotes we have been given are £7500 +, this is a nightmare. He is so frustrated, from the high of passing the test to the dispare with these companies. If anyone has any suggestion they will be greatly received, we have tried Swinton, and the comparison sites with both parents on as well.
Quinn wouldn't even give a quote!!!
Anyone who can suggest something would be a Saint!

This appears to be way above the norm - what type of car and where do you live? Was this for TPF&T or comp? Has he got any accidents etc?
  • The car is a small 1.2 fiesta, no modifications, bog standard. Live in NW and asked for quotes TPF&T. No accidents, no convictions for anything car or otherwise. Also increased the access to £300.
Tried Bewise as well and they gave £8,500. Adrian Flux £9273.
Please help, can't understand how is friend has got Aviva for £1800??????? something dodgy or I'm missing something.
    Thanks

There's been a few posts with ridiculous prices recently.
Maybe the insurance industry has decided to set prices as high as they can get away with now.
Try quotes for fully comp, put in the highest excess possible, include parents as named drivers.
Quinndirect still work out cheapest for TP, and TPF&T in some cases.

Whereabouts in North West - has he put both parents on as additional drivers, taken pass plus etc. Excess of £300 will be in addition to young driver excess and if you are only after TPF+T may be worth trying to get a comp quote and put a very high excess on to see if this brings it down. What group is a 1.2 fiesta (try parkers for grouping) as this is quite high for a first car - most go for 1.0 or less if poss.

The friend may have his parents fronting but if insurers find out then they will likely void the policy - not very helpful if he has an accident - if the friend is a girl then the quotes for girls are cheaper. Does sound as if the combination of your postcode plus the car is pushing the rate up. Have you tried a high street broker (not Swintons).

    Well worth trying Swintons.
My local one is excellent, and there's no point cutting off your nose to spite your face if they come out a lot cheaper.
You couldn't afford to make a claim anyway, so even if customer service is said to be poor, (which mine isn't), so what.
