Sorry but that Brennan thing doesn't seem like a very good system, the hard drive space on it is tiny, 80gigs top and for that model you are paying through the nose. (I mean come on, a 20gig system thats easy to fill, or a 160gig system that might mean you have to fill it in a few stages)

What's wrong with it, apart from you thinking it's expensive?

ipod however will produce a bad sound quality due to the audio going through a single dual channel 3.5mm jack.

.. but the OP is talking about using a docking station for it. WHY does 3.5mm jack connection automatically mean 'bad sound quality'?

A media center PC may be preferable though would require a speaker system on top so would cost more than just a straight hi-fi system.

The OP isn't looking to put a PC in their lounge, though...

I’ve been quite interested in this particular discussion as I’m in the process of upgrading our Music and TV (sound) system and have just plumped for a Sony Home Cinema System (BDVE370B) which, although I still have bit of setting up to finalise, is proving very good indeed as not only does it play Blue Ray DVDs and normal DVDs etc it plays music CD’s, Mp3 players thru a USB connection (though I haven’t tried that yet) and FM radio all through the excellent surround speaker system. I’m currently waiting on an additional cable which will hopefully enable TV stations sound to come through the surround system too.
What interests me still though is the idea of having our CD’s (some 600-700 of them) on a system such as the Brennan JB7 and I nearly went for one before buying the Sony system. The Brennan seems to be ideal but I am hesitating because of the extra outlay. Whether the cheaper option of an Ipod would do the job I’m not so sure especially knowing it would require copying music onto a PC before transferring onto the iPod where as the JB7 is one simple and relatively quick process. In the end I shall probably go for the JB7 once I can convince my other half, as well as myself, that we afford it on top of my recent purchases :o.

PS I believe the cheaper/smaller memory JB7 has room for 1200+ cds (compressed) so I'm confident that will be plenty of space for us for some time to come.

    Hello

Thanks for all the responses - although it does get a bit technical for an old novice like me.......:D

I'm after the versatility of the iPod idea, instead of having a largish static hi-fi system. We don't listen to music a lot these days, but now and again we find ourselves missing not having the option.

I understand we need a PC to enable us to transfer the music from CDs over to an iPod - but surely this can be done as a temporary measure - i.e. once they're on the iPod, the files can be deleted from the PC - and as long as we keep the CD, we don't "lose" the data. I was looking at an iPod classic too, which holds a lot of music files (for us, anyway!)

    (Hope that makes sense!)

I think an iPod will suit OPs needs. I have been there done just that and it works fine for me.

My iPod is plugged into a docking station and plays through my TV surround sound.

I have a Denon stand alone HiFi system and although the reproduction is better. It is not nearly as convenient to use and in fact I rarely use it now. How often are you able to sit quietly in a room, where you would be able to appreciate the difference?

I don't want to hijack this thread but I've been looking for something similar. All I need is a device with a large (500GB+) hard disk with a small display that will play mp3's through an external amp. Of course there needs to be a method (wired or wireless) of getting mp3's from my PC onto the device. Any ideas?

    Thanks

You'll need to disable the Auto Sync feature of iTunes once you're up and running, and set the iPod to 'Manually manage music' if you want to be able to delete the data from iTunes and retain it on the iPod.

If you delete the CDs from iTunes and have Auto Sync on, the next time you connect the iPod, they'll be deleted from the iPod too.

Apple designed it as a one-way process - the iPod automatically aligns itself to the content of the iTunes library, iTunes being the Master, iPod the Slave.

Cheap option one of these . we have one and it does a job ( though not a patch on CD's through my Arcam DVD)

more expensive for just using a Ipod is one these that let your amp do the processing . probably not worth it unless you have a good quality Amp and speakers

if you really want to splash out and create a PC/ computer based home music system , you will need one these + decent Amp / speakers / interconnects

I think the Onkyo then requires a separate DAC too.

    1. Depends on what the OP calls 'HiFi'

    2. Yes, I'm merely making the point that if you move them around on the external drive, or move them to another drive, iTunes loses track of them when you attempt to play, sync or modify their info within iTunes

    3. See 2.
Yep, fairy nuff (I guess I might be a bit of a hi-i snob).

All I was saying on iTunes losing track of files if you move them around is that you don't need to re-rip them, rather you just have to tell iTunes where they are, eg. by dragging & dropping in the MP3 files
