Mobile AMD Sempron 64 3200+..Any Good?

I am particularly looking at this acer laptop which has a Mobile AMD Sempron 64 3200+ (1.6GHz) procesor.

What will this be like compared to a Pentium M processor or even a Celeron?

Would be more compared to a centrino than either a pentium m or a celeron.

Sempron CPUs are mainly rivals for celerons but the mobile processors by general rule are easier to cool than their non-mobile counerparts.

Regards it within the laptop you are looking at it is above the standard of the low budjet laptops on offer at the moment.

Another note any AMD XP/Athlon processor the model number refers to the fact it should or AMD claim that it runs at the same speed as it's Intel Pentium 4 counter part. the Sempron range usually is compared to the celeron speeds, but are usually marked as 200 points higher than the XP/Athlon that runs at the speed GHz speed.

no it does have a slightly faster CPU but less hard drive space as well as stating it has 128MB graphics, it shares it from the RAM rather than having it's own seperate memory, the orginal Acer with the Sempron CPU is probably the same on the graphics front.

I'd go for the Sempron as it has more hard drive space, but I do prefer AMD CPUs to Intels.

It is a trade off, 100MHz extra CPU power and a bit more L2 CACHE or 20GB Hard Drive space.

Ill probably go for the sempron then because my desktop is also a sempron 3000 and runs much better than my intel pc. Plus the extra 20 gig will be handy.

I have been watching the thread closely. The problem I have is the site doesnt show the specs. I have seen the laptop with the same model number but with a 60gb/80gb hard drive in the internet.

fair enough, it is a good deal if it is the higher spec model. surpose it is better to know what you are getting rather than a lucky dip.

I know yeah, i am suprised that so many people have gone for this without knowing the spec. Its better to know what it is first then order! It saves all the hassle of returning the product etc

P.S I have seen the sempron laptop from savastore for 472.00inc delivery plus 3% from quidco here...not a bad price!

erm what are you on about - 'centrino' isn't a processor its intels bundled mobile pentium (dothan etc) and wireless connectivity all rolled in together in a laptop.

Its kind of like a celeron but is a replacement for the athlon xp range unless its the socket 754 then its 64 bit and a fairly good processor.
  • A Celeron M is basically a Pentium M with its power saving features and usually half of its L2 cache disabled. Clock for Clock a Celeron M runs 5% to 10% slower than a Pentium M in most benchmarks if I can remember correctly!

The Mobile Sempron will probably have slightly better battery life whereas the Celeron M will probably have better perfomance in 32 bit applications.
