Virgin Media cancellation fee?!

Hello,

I am with Virgin at the moment (broadband and TV). I am moving to uni in September, so rang today to cancel my service as my new house has Sky and is paid for by the landlord.

I thought i only had to give 1 months notice to quit. When i spoke to India, she said that because i have given 1 months notice, i will not receive a cancellation charge. But, because i am ending the contract, i must may about $85 extra on top of my final months bill. She was saying something about me breaking a 6 month contract early, i have no idea what she is talking about. She has now refused to end my contract saying because i said i was not aware of these charges and refuse to pay it. i have asked a manager to ring me asap.

Is this right? Does everyone have to pay this? I had an original 1 year contract when i signed up in Aug 2008, but since then i was on the undrstanding i was rolling.

Please advise, i don't need this extra stress right now!

Thanks!
J
