0844 number charges

I have just found out that my mobile phone company charges 40p per minute when using 0844 number. They tell me it is approved by Ofcom as it is a help line. Are there ways around this excessive charge.

Most government departments use this 0844.

Ofcom site say they should be up t0 6p a minute.

Any advice apart from do not use. You are almost forced into using them

They range from half a pence to 5p a minute from a BT Landline only,depending on numbering range. Other suppliers can and do charge what they feel like to call them.

Government departments usually use 0845 ,a different kettle of fish.

That rate only applies to landlines, mobile networks have always treated all 08xx numbers as huge profit makers. Even 0800 is chargeable at up to 40p per minute from mobiles.
