Hi,

did you try looking for free OCR as suggested in post 8?

Found this one, but have never used it.
under the help section of my printer it says

The HP Scanning software uses optical character recognition (OCR) to convert text on a page to text that you can edit with a word processing program. The OCR software is installed automatically when you install the HP software.
1Start the HP Solution Center.2Click Scan Document.3In the HP Scanning software, do one of the following tasks:
In the Scan to drop-down list, click a word processing software program, such as Microsoft Word.In the Scan to drop-down list, click Save-to-file, and then select one of the following file types:Rich Text Format (*.rtf)Tiff Format (*.tiff)PDF (searchable) (*.pdf)Text File (*.txt)HTML (*.html)
Note A searchable PDF does not contain editable text, but OCR is used to make the text in the PDF searchable.
4Click Scan.
If a preview is displayed, make any adjustments to the scan that you want, and then click Accept.

Tip If you are creating HTML files in languages other than the language of your computer's operating system during scanning, do not use extended ASCII characters in the file name.

in step 3 above there is no mention of microsoft word or openoffice all i have is this eb1lr7.jpg
• Hi,

after you have selected 'save to file' for file type, do you get the option PDF?

Surely you need to click the Scan Document Settings button and change the setting, as at the moment it is set to Document scan as Image (No OCR)
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:

My bad sorry have you tried as rtf, then open with OO , most OCR software (free/indirectly paid for) is fairly rudimentary and the one I have with MS Off2007 makes mistakes. If your scanner as your post suggests try save as rtf and then OO or MsOffice will read it but there will be mistakes let us know.
Edit
There is a trial for Abbyy finereader from here too which should work with OO
