My old laptop has just broken. When you turn the laptop on it starts to power up and then a black screen appears and you cannot seem to do/see anything! But sound works!
Help! Any advice tips, information would be great to try and get this laptop back up and working.

can you try attaching it to an external display? there may well be a function button on your laptop to get your video output going to the external display easily.Friendly greeting!0

Well either you have another monitor or you don't? If you do,what other equipment do you need? The advice given above is sound.
If by 'sound works' you mean that it makes the normal sounds that it would when loading to the Windows desktop, then display failure (or graphics output failure) are the most likely causes, so you need to eliminate LCD failure by doing as suggested. No free lunch, and no free laptop

when it boots up do you see the initial writing on the screan or is it black from the moment you push the power button?Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Could be a simple loose wire going to the screen, the hinge connectors do tend to be a part that breaks due to all the movement.
Either way you should be able to save any data on there but you will probably need to go to a repair shop or manufacturer unless you want to try taking it apart yourself.
P.S. If you want to save your data be careful with manufacturers and repair people. (Just ask them about your data before hand)0 -
What make/model is the laptop? Is it a Compaq Presario? If so it may be suffering from a known problem that HP/Compaq will fix for free.

Right the facts:
When i turn on the Dell Inspiron 1501 comes up with the normal start up screen when you first see it.
Then it asks for my HDD Password.
I enter that and then it goes to either 2 screens.
