    Hello all,

I'm considering buying a vacuum sealer so that I can make my own ready meals, the one I have in mind is the Seal a Meal from Lakeland, which is £69.99. Does anyone have one of these? Would you recommend it?

    Thankyou in advance...
    Nic

I had one of these but had to return three of these as it kept going wrong. In the end I got a refund and looked elsewhere.

I am now using an Eiffel Freshpack Pro vacuum sealer, a little bit more money but worth every penny as it has been rock solid and works very well. I bought it online from Fresherpack http://www.fresherpack.com

    Hello,

Just wanted to ask if anybody has used or own's a Foodsaver, it's a machine which vacum packs food to preserve it for longer. There seem to be two types one being about £40 by JML and another the original i think which is £99. I am thinking of investing in one to store my batch cooking etc but would love to know if anybody here uses one and what you may think of it??

    Thanks Clare.

I looked at vacuum packing foodsavers a while ago and decided that the domestic ones (JML etc) all looked cruddy, there were some reviews about how difficult they were to keep clean).

The commercial ones were all expensive £100+ and whilst I was very tempted I decided it wasn't really worth it. I might invest in the future as I like the idea of making portions of food that can then be used as "boil in the bag".

I bought some Lakeland "boil in the bag" bags and just squish the water our of these and they seem OK.

If you order one, make sure you get it from a place that has a 30 day money-back guarantee (like QVC, for instance).

This one on the QVC website seems pretty good, but the reviews are mixed (although you could try it, and send it back for a refund if you didn't like it): http://www.qvcuk.com/ukqic/qvcapp.aspx/app.detail/params.item.827396/walk.yah.UKHG-UK14#reviews

That one is also on the Lakeland website for slightly more.

A cheaper, non-vacuum, sealer is on the JML website for about a fiver. I've got something similar, and while it doesn't vacuum the air out it's pretty useful: http://www.jmldirect.com/Handy-Seal-PH4885/

I've got that hand-held JML one and it's great - but it's definitely NOT classed as a foodsaver. However it is brilliant for re-sealing plastic bags of cereal, crisps, salad, freezer bags of veggies (no more peas/sweetcorn rolling around in the bottom of the freezer!).

This is the JML version of a foodsaver system and it's much cheaper than others that I've seen advertised. But I haven't always been happy with JML stuff - some things are good and others are just like cheapo copies of other people's expensive versions.

    Hi mophead,

There's an older thread on vaccum sealers with some recommendations that should help so I've added your thread to it to keep all the replies together.

  • I had bought a cheaper one which didn't work well,so invested in Jml food sealer fantastic it comes with rolls of bags you cut to size which are reusable, but you can buy the bags in different sizes on Ebay, forget cheap sandwich bags though.

If anyone is looking for a FoodSaver vacuum sealer, I have just bought a Foodsaver V475 for £19.99 off ebay (not arrived yet as I only bought it yesterday).

I already have the small secondhand FoodSaver that I bought off ebay for £30+ so I was just looking to buy some replacement bags for that one.

Anyway, I found this bigger one that also comes with a few bags, a 10ft roll, bottle stoppers etc and a canister.
