Using mobile as a modem *help needed*

I am going on holiday for a week at the end of the month and need to take my netbook with me but there is no internet access where we are staying (rented house).

I have a mobile phone with internet access on it and wondered if I can use this as a modem for my netbook?

I don't really want to buy a dongle and pay for a contract, even a one month one, just to use it for a week.

I don't know much about any of this so would be very grateful for any help you are able to offer me.

This is known as tethering and most mobile phone contracts which include internet access prohibit it. Of course you can ignore the prohibition and go ahead but you could end up with a huge bill. Check your contract or call your operator and ask if you can't find the info. If it is allowed and you can't figure out how to do it ask again.
  • I was in Devon last month and needed internet to check business emails etc.

I had an unlocked Nokia N86 and bought a payg dongle on 3.

£11 for the sim with £10 credit and 150 Meg data, and you can add a bundle on as well

I would advise against using a contract as you could run up a mega bill- if it is payg then you just get cut off when data has run out

I got 2 Mb speed on my mobile (used speed test)

You have to remember we are not mind readers, what handset do you have?
I can tell you that the SE K750i, K850i and Satio all work as a dongle when connected to a pc via the usb lead or by bluetooth

Thanks for the advice. My mobile is a samsung blade, sorry not to say in the original post!

Good idea not to use a contract phone to do it, would be easy to run up a big bill.

ive used tethering on my SE Satio and My N95 before that on orange and have never had any type of problem with them contacting me about it, i know its prohibited but im not sure the networks can actually tell what method you are using to get on the net, otherwise i would have been found out ages ago,

Cant do it now on my Iphone as it doesnt let me unless i Jailbreak it but dont want to do that!

Ok so how do I actually do it? Do I need a cable to connect the phone to the netbook? Think my phone came with a usb lead, do I use that? Or is it done through bluetooth?
I really don't know much about it so would apprechaite a step by step idiot's guide on how to do it!!

  • Samsung phones usually have software on a cd

If it can connect to the intenet you can install it from there.

I have a nokia and the missus has a samsung i8910, the samsung comes with a data suite- this usually has the software to do the internet

You do know you can buy dongles on pay as you go. Might be a good option. They are not the dear to but with data pre-loadedm, i.e. Three's pay-as-you one with 3GB of pre-load data only costs a one off fee of £39.99, and then you top it up as and when you need it with out being tied to a 12 month contract.
Also you have to be very careful with hooking a mobile to a laptop for internet use (costs can rise), i'd recomend going for a pay-as-you go dongle.
