Driving newly bought car with no tax

Thanks for the replies. I have had problems in the past with taxing my other car as the insurance certificate had not arrived, I was going to do it online but after phoning the DVLA and being told I could still not drive the car because although it was taxed I am unable to display the tax disc in the car. Using a trailer would be a solution, but as the car is only worth £800 the additional cost added to the cost of buying the car would be unjustified. The solution that may work would be to get email confirmation of insurance, if the insurance company will do this, and see if the post office will accept it.
 Thanks again0

I think this no longer valid. If you have purchased online you can drive for 5 working days with no disc on display. This is the only time you can. But there may be a problem if the car has been SORN'ed until now. Thanks for the replies. I think the 5 days rule only applies if you tax online before the old disc runs out.

OP, assuming you have somewhere off road to store it I’d go with the MOT idea, if the current one is fairly short then you get a new MOT, if the current one is new-ish then cancel the test as you reach your house.

Might even be worth doing it anyway, that way you get an independent check on the mechanical bits & pieces0

 No. Ignore this advice.
This 5 days of grace is only for renewals. (And you need to have bought the tax online prior to the old one expiring)
ie. the car must have the old tax disc on it (and this must have just expired). Thus the 5 days can only begin on the first day of the month following expiry of the tax.
(And its just 5 days, not 5 working days)0

If you buy the tax online it will be sent to the previous owner.I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

Just out of curiosity, what is the likely penalty for driving a just purchased untaxed (but otherwise legal) car home.
My mate reckons the car can be confiscated and crushed!! Seems harsh.0

It is an 'offence' to not display a valid tax disc, so even if done online there is a risk of prosecution,
yes if you drive a car on the road without said tax then it can be confiscated and crushed
depending how far the car is away a 'typical' cost of transporting on a trailer or similar is apx£2 per mileI MOJACAR0 MOJACAR0
