Hi there
The surest way is to get O2 to unlock it. It may not be the cheapest, but do you want to risk a tenner and some bloke in a dodgy shop when it could turn your phone into a brick?
O2 will charge you £15 (clicky), but it's better to be safe than sorry. In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0 -
if you are contract it is free through o2
IF YOU DO IT UNOFFICIALLY IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM IT INVALIDATES YOUR WARRANTYWho remembers when X Factor was just Roman suncream?0 -

This all depends on what iphone you have. If you have a iphone 4 they will not unlock the phone. Other than that everything else that was said is 100% correct. Here is more info on it and also you can just fill the online form and they do it in like a week although they do say 2 weeks.
Apart from this if it is a iphone 4 you can still jailbreak and unlock it if you just do a tiny bit of research on google and youtube.

The unlock status is held on apple's database for iphones, which is why when you restore an unlocked iphone itunes says "congratulations you iphone is unlocked".
Any "unofficial" jailbreak based unlock will get removed on each itunes restore, together with the jailbreak.0
