tesco and vouchers.

Options
Hiya I just need some advice on something.

As I understand it from scouring other threads, tesco will take any coupon (item bought or not) as long as you dont exceed 30% of total, and you dont hand in multiples.

BUT

(and here is where I am confused)

I presume this applies to coupons (ie 50p off, £5 off £40 spend etc)

what about gift vouchers off companies, for exaple, I have some vouchers i ot from a complaint i made. they just say

£1 voucher, not £1 off.

does the policy differ on this?

ie, can I use 5 of these, as even thouh they are multiples, they are not for money off? they are just vouchers worth £1?

  • Be careful with Tesco because they do not have a standard policy for accepting vouchers. It is up to the individual store manager. The Tesco at Bursledon, Southampton do not accept vouchers unless you have bought the product:( but many other stores do accept them . gift vouchers should be taken as payment and you should be able to use them like cash. i.e they come off the total and you can use as many as you have.

Well said Elljay. Tesco's policy does vary from store to store. Of the 3 tesco's I have near me, 2 have now gone to 1 coupon per shop ( but the other will let me do one of each type of coupon).

As per advice I've read before, if you get them accepted great, if not, keep them for your next shop.

    Good Luck

Tesco voucher acceptance varies from store to store, to cashier to cashier and sometimes even the individual's mood !! voucher acceptance is a BONUS not an automatic right. If you go there with this frame of mind you will be OK.

I had huge problems with my local branch, accepting vouchers which resulted in me being followed around the store by some jobsworth. I complained to the top man at Tescos, I emailed CS, I phoned CS I made it clear I was not happy with them. Never did the manger phone me to apologise for his staff's behaviour. I don't shop there much now as the cashiers are only supposed to accept vouchers for purchased items, however ................. now they have had self scanners installed which apparently take 10% of the shopping bill in vouchers regardless of a purchase or not !!! guess I will be going to them from now on.

In the meantime, I have another 2 stores that I visit - today I had a shopping bill of £104 - after bogofs and vouchers this reduced to just £68, the cashier was quite happy to scan my vouchers and I gained 700 points which is £21 more to spend on my furniture for my new extension.

It's quite easy to post about my successes but there are also times I get refused the majority of my vouchers or they accept none at all - which is frustrating

IME you can hand over a £5 off £50 shop type coupon (Tesco or Sainsburys) at Tesco, and this does NOT count as a 'coupon used without buying the product'.

So if your local store allows you to use, say, 5 coupons without buying the product, to a maximum of say, 20% of the total shopping transaction, you can use the Tesco or Sainsbury's total spend one, (AND any amount of coupons for which you have bought the product) and then 5 more.

The percentage and amount of coupons accepted is different in all Tesco stores, you have to ask really. Then go for a young cashier (preferably male) to make sure you don't get a sour-faced refusal (only ever had this from middle-aged women!).

The gift vouchers are IMHO the same as other manufacturers' coupons. If you buy the product mentioned you can use all of them, if not you can try but you may be told 'one of each type per transaction'.
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

  • My stores do not have a percentage or the duplicate policy, I handed over 4 quick reads today and 4 loving-it vouchers as well as many others. Sometimes although the store has a policy, the cashier scans what he wants and to quote staff in my office

has anyone phoned their local store to find out there policy on accepting coupons without buying the product
  • Hello Sanran

I have phoned one store and they said the items must be purchased to use the vouchers, however after observing someone redeeming vouchers I could see that the cashiers were willing to scan vouchers for non-purchased items too

    Hi welshy,

Exactly which is why its useful to try more than one cashier in a particular store.

    Good luck

Hanley Tesco today - spent £13 and handed over a load of vouchers but only about 60p would scan.

Went off to Kidsgrove Tesco and spent £24 - girl scanned £7.50 of coupons including 2 x book vouchers and 2 x £1 cat food online vouchers (same coupons as at Hanley).

I didnt buy any of the items on the vouchers in either store.

Usually Hanley is good for taking vouchers but it does depend who you get on the tills.

Popped into Tesco's Burton on Trent this morning and could not find a single misprice:rolleyes: !

The check out lady refused all coupons as although spending £16+ not purchasing the products on the coupons (all proper coupons none internet), she said this is Tesco Policy to only accept coupons if you purchase the items. Relented after I questioned this policy and said she would allow 1 coupon. So I tried the 1/2 price book voucher from the Daily Mail but she said Tesco is not a book shop so could not accept it? Tried to argue this as there is a huge display of books just up the aisle from the end check out she was working on. But she totally refused to even try to scan it, so ended up using a Huggies £1 off voucher!
