I have travelled, 6 hours for a wedding and stopped over, also travelled 4 hours and stopped over, once travelled 20 mins and also stopped over!! If its family or friends then distance is no problem as long as somewhere is in staggering distance to crash out!!

Thank you all for your replies! I'm glad to see that in general most people seem to think an hour is reasonable. It's become even more of a pressing matter now because I found a venue today online that I've fallen in love with (obviously we have to see it yet) but again it's exactly an hour away from here.

I'm trying to consider my guests as much as possible - some will have to travel anyway no matter what as they live in various parts of the country. I think no matter where we end up choosing the problem with people being unable to drink if they want to drive home will remain; we're pretty rural, and there's nowhere in the centre of the town that's suitable.

The good news is that if we decide to go with the venue I found today then it's a whole £1750 cheaper than the original one I was considering. Which means there will be plenty spare to put a minibus, even 2 if needed! There is also a Travelodge 10 minutes down the road which hopefully means if people want to stay over they can do, and taxis back there shouldn't be too expensive either.

I went to a wedding at a beautiful venue. Couple laid on a minibus and it was about 1.5 hours each way. I didn't mind at all... And if I lived up there I'd absolutely replicate their wedding!
    I love surprises!

It's a 45 min journey and i worked out that for a full coach it would cost £15 per person for a return ticket. Hardly expensive, i pay that to get back from town in a taxi on a Sat night!

I'm obviously of a completely different mind frame to you as I consider £15 each expensive and would never consider that unless for someone very special!

Bluefire - Don't forget to haggle over the price of the venue - you might get it even cheaper.....!!

See if you can negotiate prices with travelodge too?? I know they are pretty cheap, but you might get
soemthing for block booking for your guests.

To be honest, I wouldn't worry that much about mini busses - most people will organise themselves
    and book accommodation nearby.
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

    You're kidding?

Thats what i pay every weekend if I go out in town for my taxi journey home! If people arent happy to pay £15 to come to my wedding, then im glad because i wouldnt want friends like that anyway!

I'm paying £120 for a b&b plus petrol money to get to Cornwall and back in September for a Wedding for some friends of my H2B. I guess it just depends on how much you value your friendships!

    I disagree.

It depends on how much people can afford.

I couldn't go to one of my lovely cousin's weddings in 2008, as we couldn't afford to, that doesn't mean I think any less of her and I hope she doesn't think any less of me.

And it's not just £15 is it. There is outfits, the cost of a gift, the cost of drinks, and some people have to take time off work.

If someone is broke, it doesn't matter how close and loved you are by them, if they are skint, they're skint and can't magic money up from nowhere.

hmmm yes, i was probably a bit dramatic there., its too early for me when ive only had 2 hours sleep!

Obviously, if my friends were broke id understand, but most of friends also pay that for a taxi on a saturday, so i dont think its too much to ask of them to pay to come to my wedding. I dont expect any gifts and the drinks will mostly be free anyway.

I thought I was actually helping my guests out by putting on a bus instead of making them fork out for a hotel. But now you've managed to make me feel guilty about it!

I agree, £15 is alot of money to me at the moment.

Alot of our guests spent alot of money to come to our wedding, but we made it clear that we knew it would be expensive and understood if any couldn't make it.

If someone can't afford to make it to your day it doesn't mean they don't value your friendship, they probably would feel awful at not being able to accept the invite, and even worse if they knew thats what was thought of them for being sensible and not getting into debt over it!

Oops it took me so long to write that you've already replied! If your friends are paying that much on a regular basis then maybe you would be right to be a bit miffed, but in general I stand by what I wrote originally!
