  • Any Managing Agents who don't have a lift-maintenance and repairs contract in place should be sacked! When I worked in commercial property management the lift-maint people would be out in hours, not days. That's why the annual contract costs are so expensive

A couple of days to fix a lift wouldn't be surprising, even if unwelcome..

A couple of days???? My OH is a lift engineer and with something like this, would be out that same day, but normally within a few hours depending how on far away he is from a job of course.

Who is contracted to maintain the lift?

I'm sure everyone has the best intentions, but have you thought about the implications of this if it goes wrong - if the person carrying him falls, or injures his back, the company would probably be liable for damages - I'm sure any solicitor would say that there is no way you should be allowing this!!

Please OP, get an evac chair and like tyllwyd says please and please don't carry him up the stairs piggy back. Ask him to work at home. Also wheelchair bound is a rude word, I know many people would not realise but in formal language it is like calling someone a !!!!!! or a paki. You can call him a disabled person. Don't mention in official writing or speech wheel chair bound as you can be sued!

Wow sorry if I just offended anyone there! Really didn't know that! Sorry! Will change that now! I've told my directors about the chair! The piggy back was just a temporary measure obviously! It's not what we were planning on doing! He didn't want to go home and it was him that suggested it!!!

The lift technician is now here thankfully! Thanks everyone! xx

How can I change the thread name or delete it? Don't want to offend anyone here!!!!

You have a responsibility (assuming you're the manager, which I guess you are) under the health and safety a work acts. You absolutely should not be allowing anyone to piggy back him down the stairs!

Tell the guy he must work from home until the lift is fixed.

You shouldn't be using the lift in a fire even if it was fixed.

At my old office we had an awesome sliding chair thing down the fire escape. I was never allowed to try it. :(

Katieh86 don't worry about me I am not offended, just saying so, as I used to work for a University and had some disabled students under my care as H&S officer, so one of the first things I was corrected on was wheelchair bound etc  by the legal bod and nurse who trained us. Very easy mistake to make but useful to know as you never know what the individual may think of it. From what I understood it means like the disabled person is cursed to their chair. I once got told off as a sexist by the people who monitor us as I said the secretary, she (all ours are female) may, I was supposed to use they (as it could be male or female) :rotfl:
Just don't worry, but be careful at work, especially if you had a boss like mine :A
