Definitely not location. My friends live all over the world. The current property owners are in England; London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex and Leeds. Ireland; Dublin, Wicklow, Limerick, Ennis, Waterford, Cavan and Meath. France; outside Marseille and Normandy. Also Bulgaria, Rome, the Algarve and Chicago.
A lot of people my age bought at the peak, with 100% mortgages. And I hate to say it but some of them, especially in Ireland and England, did so with mortgages they could never afford on a monthly basis. They were relying on increasing house prices to cover the annual borrowings necessary to keep them afloat. Or upon the income from letting a room, which is now harder than it was, especially in Ireland where there is such a massive oversupply 1 in 6 habitable properties lie empty.0 -
