Transferring Number to New Contract - How long have I got?

I know that with many retailers you can provide your PAC when you take out the contract and a few days later your number is transferred, normally with a temporary number in the interim. I also note that retailers including Mobiles.co.uk say that you can contact the network later after receiving your phone to transfer your number in - but how long have you got? I suspect that there is an assumption that you will do this straight away, but is there a limit?

There is what I think may be a good offer on at the moment but I need to let my existing contract run until later this month for the final m18 bill for cashback and don't want to mess it up, need to keep my number and there is always a chance that the offer will have finished closer to my contract date so don't want to lose out.

Many thanks

On all networks apart from Voda you can port in at any time. With Voda you can only port in at the point you sign up to the contract.

Thank you - I am considering an Orange contract so from what you say I could order now and transfer the number in a few weeks time without issue. If this is a cashback deal with Mobiles.co.uk, who allow Porting, this shouldn't cause an issue with cashback?

Also, does anyone know please - when you port your number does your contract (and payment due) terminate on the date that the number transfers (and any overpayment for that month theefore refunded), or does the payment period continue for all the 30 days from the date that you requested the PAC (even though the contract has ended and you are no longer receiving the benefit of texts and minutes from the plan that you had paid for)?

    Many thanks
