Electric shock from my washing machine drum - Advice please

Hello,

My 15 month old hotpoint wmd960 gave me an electric shock when i took my washing from the drum. It also had been leaking a little water now again, im not sure if this is conected to the shock i received.

I would just like advice if it could be repairable rather than scrapping it & having to buy another machine.

I do not have warranty on it as I didnt pay for an extension :(

Any advice is appreciated.

Kind regards

15 months old is still SOG territory, ring the retailer and remind them of this and they should sort it out for you

are you sure it was a 240v mains power shock and not just a static electric shock?

Shouldn't the static discharge through the earth anyway?

A full electric shock, a small static spark, or a mild tingle?
  • Hello, thanks for replying.

The washing was soaking wet so the washing machine hadnt spun the washing even though it had finished the cycle, so could i still get a static shock if that was the case?

The shock was a sharp tingle that went up my hand into my arm, what is that then please?

    Kind regards

if its an earth fault on your machine then in theory your fuseboard should trip (assuming you have a rcd fitted to you fuseboard) its probly best to get a repituable repairer out & he also should do an earth loop impediance test on the socket its pluged into, that way you test the earth on your electrical circuit aswell.

Your description certainly sounds like you received a mains jolt...did you have shoes or socks on at the time? Where was your other hand - the one which did not receive the tingling sensation...i.e. was it touching anything metallic, such as the outer casing of the machine, a stainless sink, etc?

Assuming the RCD (where fitted) was operational.

OP - What type of fuseboard do you have?

If you do go down the repairer route, and they do take an Earth Fault Loop Impedence reading, and assuming they understand the reading, and there is a problem, then get an electrician in to give your installation a thorough inspection and test, including seeing if the property has a suitable main earth and main bonding..

  • Thanks again for your replies.

I had bare feet & i was crouching down , I think i was holding the washing machine door open, i certainly wasn't touching anything metallic.

Our house is only 3 years old & it didn't trip the fuse box at all - sorry I don't know much about electrics.

Do you think that the machine could be repairable?

    Kind regards

It may certainly be repairable, but at this point you don't yet know if the fault is on the appliance or on the circuit. Which is why you need to get both tested ASAP.
