Bottled water @ service stations.

Options
I am not a regular traveller and I know that this is probably familar to those who are.

Last weekend we were travelling form Yorkshire to Gatwick Airport and we overnighted with family in Leicester. The following morning I filled up at Sainsburys Petrol Station close to the M1 J21 and I also bought a 75cl bottle of Vittel water for £0.75. At Toddington Services on the M1, which is run by Moto, the same Vittel bottle was being sold for an eye-watering £1.79. That is 133% more than the Sainsburys price.

I know theat the service stations have higher running costs, but this amounts to blatant profiteering on one of their biggest selling products. It is not an item that may be bought on impulse, many drivers and passengers will pick up a bottle and pay, regardless of cost.

  • Did you buy the bottle or just observe the price ? If you bought one next time perhaps buy 2 from Sainsburys before any long journey

  • Recycle the empty bottles by keeping them and filling with tap water, much cheaper.

Buy in the supermarket in advance. There is another French brand that you can get - 6 x 1.5 litre bottles for under £1.

I cover a lot of miles for work, and keep a multipack of bottled water from the supermarket in the back of the car. It works out much cheaper than buying bottles when I want it.
Here I go again on my own....

I'm no fan of m/way s/stations but..............you're paying for 1. Convenience (unless you want to leave the m/way and find a Tesco's at 2 am) 2. Chilled..ie it will be colder than the supermarket bottle that's been in your boot for 3 weeks.
  • Can't blame them for having over inflated prices. It only makes sense for them as a business. They know we have nowhere else to go and they face little competition.

As a consumer you can save money by buying more from supermarkets or filling up empty bottles as suggested.
They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!

You are now getting the same situation at airports. Because you can't take water through the security checks the air-side shops can charge what they like for water. I paid 90p for a small bottle of own-brand water at Boots, Manchester Airport. I am used to buying my bottled water from somewhere like Aldi for £1 for either 4 or 6 bottles. As was said above, a captive audience.
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?

To misquote a saying (very badly)..........PPPPPPPP...ie Proper Prior Planning & Purchasing Prevents Premium Price Petrol-station Purchases

At Gatwick it is 62p a bottle or 2 for 99p, so not too bad...
