Just had vauxhall car serviced at dealership

Which "Pentagon"? I've found them (Burton upon Trent) to be comparatively cheaper than other Vx dealers for servicing. In fact I've used their prices as a yardstick to obtain a reduced price from my usual dealer. Franchised dealers are more expensive but I only use currently so there are no warranty avoidance issues until next March!
Interim is usually just a glorified engine oil and filter change. Vx use longlife antifreeze (pink) which, I think, is time based, 5 years, not mileage but should be tested to determine it's effectiveness. Vx franchised dealer brake fluid change, recommended at 2 yearly intervals, is £25. Not part of routine servicing.
!!!!!! is "petrol emission"? They're extracting the urine - go elsewhere in future!
Did they carry out the annual bodywork inspection and stamp your book to that effect too? (no charge if done as part of service). The perforation (6 years)/paint warranty is stuffed if that's not done every year.0 -

No it isn't. It is a service item but with pretty much all makes, you have to book the job and its a seperate charge.0 -

Coolant? why change the coolant? that's stupid!
Oil leak? I couldn't say, have a look see if there really is an oil leak.....
Brake fluid.... Nobody ever changes brake fluid but it should be done on a major service.
Rear pads are £20 a set, why do they want £139?
!
Oh. My. God.
You change the coolant because it gets contaminated and breaks down, meaning the freezing point raises and your coolant can freeze at higher temperatures.
Brake fluid - just because you don't change it doesn't mean it shouldn't be. Brake fluid degrades through the constant heat changes with braking and with the absorbtion of water. It is less able to withstand heat and you suffer brake fade as a result, usually finding out as you head towards a S bend at the bottom of a long 1 in 6 hill and have little braking by the bottom.
And why do they want £139 a set? Well the £20 ones are likely to be made out of grass for a start and the overheads of running a garage are not insignificant.0 -
thanks for all the responses.
think i will be getting a 2nd look at the probs stated!!0 -

Just wondering if any good peeps on here could advise as to the quotes i've got for the relevant problems are good or not??
It's for an Vauxhall Astra SXi (2006)
Underbonnet
- Engine oil level/ antifreeze - Coolent requires replacement due to mileage ( £70 )
Water/Oil/Fluid Leaks - Oil leak around front crank oil seal area(advise full strip to fully inspect) ( £105 )
Brakes & Hubs
advise brake fluid change ( £50 )
Rear brake pads worn, requires replacement ( £139 )
Have not listed the item's that are just advisory and I'm sure price includes labour.
many thankscollywollys wrote: »hi
yeah it's been serviced every year, it's done 36,000
it was an interim service if that makes a difference to whats done or not!!
am i hearing you right? an 06 plate with 36,000 miles with a crank shaft oil seal leaking?
coolant needing changed due to mileage?
brake fluid is advisable to change but not a big deal at this age. did they test the fluid and give you the reason why it should be changed? they should test it for water content. as for a percentage of how much water is in your brake fluid.
find a good independant garage and steer clear of this dealership.
at most at 36,000 miles i would be expecting brake pads to be changed, nothing much else. and i wouldn't be paying that price for just pads....work permit granted!0 -

I had this done for £100 all inclusive at my local dealership, My car is a 54 Vectra SRi 2.2 with 18" alloys so I imagine a bigger car with bigger wheels..£139 sounds a bit steep...0 -
To be honest I wouldn't bother with dealership servicing particularly if the car is no longer under warranty.
The main bulk of the costs of servicing at these places is the vastly inflated hourly labour rates.
Do yourself a favour and find a good local independent garage and get it serviced there.
People worry about reselling prices of cars because of service history, yes that may add a few quid but you'll probably find that you would lose the difference in paying for servicing at dealerships.
I don't know where you live collywollys as I'm sure that will impact on the costs of servicing, as I'm sure it would be a lot more to service a car in London for example than where I live. But none the less I can almost guarantee that it will be better value at a local independent garage. Just watch out for dodgy garages. Best thing is to go by recommendations.0
