and recieved the visual health check, which found £610 pounds worth of repairs

Just wondering if any good peeps on here could advise as to the quotes i've got for the relevant problems are good or not??

It's for an Vauxhall Astra SXi (2006)

Underbonnet

- Engine oil level/ antifreeze - Coolent requires replacement due to mileage ( £70 )

Water/Oil/Fluid Leaks - Oil leak around front crank oil seal area(advise full strip to fully inspect) ( £105 )

Brakes & Hubs

advise brake fluid change ( £50 )

Rear brake pads worn, requires replacement ( £139 )

Have not listed the item's that are just advisory and I'm sure price includes labour.

many thanks

Brake fluid change is done as part of normal servicing. Has the car been serviced regularly? How many miles has it done?

Engine oil is part of a service.....
Coolant? why change the coolant? that's stupid!

Oil leak? I couldn't say, have a look see if there really is an oil leak.....

Brake fluid.... Nobody ever changes brake fluid but it should be done on a major service.

Rear pads are £20 a set, why do they want £139?

List the rest and then list the dealerships name, I could use a laugh....

Oh and join an Astra owners forum, see what they have to say!

Not in my experience it isnt. It is an optional extra and IMO doesnt need changing

I am assuming that this was a cheap/free offer. The purpose of these is to find work that could potentially need doing and get the customer booked in. Frequently, the work listed doesn't typically need doing for a good few thousand miles yet. The majority of most of the costs is labour at anything up to £200 an hour.

I would take the car to an independent coachworks and see what they say.

The only time I use dealerships is when the service is included as part of the purchase agreement, other than that, just simle nicely, say thanks, and then take it to the coachworks where they charge £60ph and do a much better job.

    hi

yeah it's been serviced every year, it's done 36,000

it was an interim service if that makes a difference to whats done or not!!
  • Quick look at the bits and bobs needed and these are the prices roughly from Vauxhalls... I know parts and fluids can be had cheaper before anyone gets excited;)... but they are Normal Retail as quoted from the VX Tradeclub...so would cost a dealer less.

Should be the Red VX Coolant which is good for 5 years in it and that at Vauxhall is £13 for 5litres.... Half hour job at tops so £70 I think is bit steep... I swapped mine for the longlife Pink couple of weeks back and it was £9.89 for Carplan stuff.

The Brake fluid isnt a big job and fluid is around £6 litre from VX cheaper per litre if you buy 5 etc I cant recall how many litres would be needed...

Crankseal.. hard to say without seeing it obviously strip and insection is required.

Rear pads are around £20-25 depending where you go and 45mins tops to swap.

I'd suggest going to a independent garage rather than a VX dealer..

    +1.

Vauxhall charge silly amounts for parts & labour. A local independent garage can do the same work for you for much less.

    hi

    sorry i might be confusing here but on the invoice it says;

    Pentagon Emissions Service

    Filter element £6.07
    O-ring £0.85p
    Pump Oil 5W/30 £21.25
    Petrol emission £25.87

i had the above done on top of the interim service total cost £101
  • It's out of warranty and you are throwing money away by paying main stealers!

Google for a local Vauxhall specialist or a good independent garage.

I have a Volvo and Mercedes serviced for £35 per hour, far less than you are paying!
