Civil Service Redundancies

I told my Accountant yesterday I had been offered redunancy and what should I do his reply "Take it" but knowning my luck I'm 1 of those who will cost them too much money but heres hoping. Roll on October 22nd.

Remember that the NICS provides a lot of employment in our wee country, the knock on effect of losing as many jobs as should go, would not be great for a very weak economy.
The average American production or software job in Northern Ireland costs us around £24k per annum, are we better off training young people in the civil service for less or paying them for some crappy hard drive assembly line job which will cease as soon as the grants do ?I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:0 -

Stevemp yes I have my own Accountant but I am holding down 2 jobs 1 PAYE and the other self-employed.0 -
Its how they do it that concerns me - it is usually the most experienced staff that choose to leave when the call comes - leaving inexperienced staff behind.
This is the real concern. We cut down the service and are left with only the slackers who probably wouldnt be able to get a job anywhere else. Then the service stops working only for it to be upscaled almost as soon as a sniff of money returns.
The reforms need to extend beyond the here and now. A civil service job has become like the old council house - for life. It is about time that the civil service got with the times and ensured that its staff were doing what they were supposed to and, if not, got rid of them.Always overestimating...0 -
As soon as the Comprehensive Spending Review comes through in October, then the offers of voluntary redundancy will come, but only if they've managed to get the new redundancy rules in. It'll probably happen but its not certain, and if it doesn't they won't be able to afford the redundancy costs. Could you imagine any other employer who having lost in the High Court, just changes the law ?? Its open to challenge as an abuse of Parliamentary powers and could go back to court, which at the very least might delay things.
Also can't see a lot of volunteers given the employment situation generally and inferior redundancy payments. In my Dept. we had a voluntary redundancy scheme only a couple of years ago i.e. those who wanted to go have gone. Its 25 to 30% over 4/5 years so natural wastage will account for a bit, but there's bound to be compulsory redundancies imho, especially outside London.
As mentioned before its those with talent that will leave and also there's the small question of who's going to do the work ? Presumably the private sector, whose motive will be profit rather than public service , and will also have shareholders to pay. See what's happened to outsourcing IT in the public sector - VFM for the Tax payer ?? I don't think so.0 -
I applied for a job in the Passport Office last September and after a few months of hearing nothing thought that I hadn't been successful. I was surprised in April to get a phone call asking was I still interested and if so inviting me for interview. I went along and got a letter shortly after saying I had passed the interview. The next step was passing the security checks and then I was advised that I would go on a waiting list for 12 months. The HR guy at the passport office advised me that this list is kept as a back up and when a dept needs a new member of staff they take the next on the list.
Does this mean (with all the talk of redundancies and cut backs) that I am not likely to get the phone call as natural wastage is not being replaced?:j Norn Iron Club Member No. 343 :j0 -

I wouldn't be too optimistic. The Passport Office is part of the Home Civil Service and they have a recruitment freeze in place (as does the Northern Ireland Civil Service). Chances are vacancies will be filled internally by staff declared surplus elsewhere, or simply not filled at all.0 -
Most UK civil service departments are offering voluntary redundancy packages now (ahead of the changes), but the expensive people aren't expected to be successful.I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care
