A few years ago I sold some old French Franc coins to a dealer at a boot sale; seems they were now valueless for conversion to Euro's BUT French companies could still used them as a loss against tax.
All goes to show you never know the worth of something to someone else.
Beware of sticking your fingers blind down the sides of cushions, there might be something nasty and sharp hidden down there too.
(Hepatitis anyone).
I once had a job that involved booking in cars returned to a leasing company (amazing the amount of money that could go down the back of the back seat - Is that why it is called playing away from home?) Most modern cars now have seats that are far too good a fit & screwed down - making like difficult for fingers but not coins!0 -
All well and good, but it is a ridiculous thing to state..how do they (whoever they might be) know how much money is down the back of people's sofas?0

I bought my first car in 1991 (a mini) for £20.00 and found £3.50 in change under the back seat! A whole car for £16.50!0

Yep, been having a good week! Husband's overalls (not been worn for 6 months) £60 top pocket, my old handbag - £40 in secret pocket, trousers in wardrobe £5 (they'd been laundered and ironed) and £4.70 on the floor of the car! Total £109.70 (haven't checked the sofas yet). Going to spend it on hubby, kids and me, yipee!!!!0

Yep... over 80 quid, and I was only hoping to find enough to get a loaf of bread... bit embarassing really....
When I was little, we had a chair that swallowed money. My little hands were the only ones that could reach down the back, and after my parents had friends over, the next day, I would seek my new stash... classic! :T0 -
As a schoolteacher running a gardening club, I sometimes sent the kids out round the playgrounds to pick up all the discarded change. They often came back with £1 or more each and that funded alot of the plants in the school garden. If they found a £1 or 50p coin we reported it to the office but I don't recall any ever being claimed!
I was often shocked by the casual way they treated money, sometimes even in class they would see they had dropped 20p or so but could rarely be bothered to pick it up. More for the garden fund!0 -

They know how many homes there are in the country, so they check one sofa (or just estimate how much might be in it) then multiply that by the number of homes (they assume every home has one sofa) to get a total for the country.0 -
I did this a little while ago. I have a pot where I throw all my change, and being a bloke, I normally only put a few pound coins in my pocket when I go out and use notes or cards for the rest, so it tends to build up.
I emptied the pot and counted it up, and was amazed to total over £250 ! There was £90+ in pound coins alone!
My husband did this before he meet me - he was rich then, he isnt anymore:rotfl:
He then asked me to count it and I said for 10% - should have said more as there was more than £600:eek:
He doesnt have any spare cash to do it now lol“You’re only here for a short visit.

Jar £440.31/£667.95 and Bank £389.67/£667.950 -
Yes, you're quite right, they take a commission of about 8%. That's why only the small ones went in, I couldn't be bothered sorting them!
My local Natwest in Winchester has a coin sorting machine, you just tip in your coins and it puts the amount into your account, no comission. Very useful!0 -
I got a £1 coin, a couple of 1p's and a lot of legowading through the treacle of life!
debt 2016 = £21,000. debt 2021 = £0!!!!0
