I have just read petrol prices are going up again. These companies have us by the nads.....isn't there anything we can do to drive down their prices???

One solution is:

To choose a company as a group of individuals and then make a concious decision not to buy petrol there for a month, 2 months. And then move onto another company. Im not sure if it's a good idea, if it's workable but we have to do something as these petrol companies are fleecing us!

Looking for advice and support....

The tories have promised a fair fuel stabiliser, and a reduction in fuel tax - why not try getting them to deliver on what they promise????

Fuel prices go up up up. But the amount of cars on the road doesn't go down. Infact the amount of cars on the roads round here seems to be growing.

I can't believe the stop buying it at one station they'll reduce their prices still goes around. It hasn't worked before and it does because 1. Fuel has a tiny margin in most petrol stations hence why so many are shutting but in the main 2. some folk will ignore it / not know about it / don't care.

Fancy it might be difficult to get to work. Personally I think they should look at cutting fuel tax in rural areas of Wales, Scotland, Cornwall etc.

The profit margin is so small on fuel that most service stations make hardly anything on it. Some actually lose when people pay by credit card. They continue to sell it because it brings in punters who then buy their ludicrously over priced mineral water, milk and sandwiches.

0.1p per litre is the standard profit margin on petrol.

Go and see if the tories will actually do anything they promised in their manifesto, or maybe they'll let the libs have a go at this one - they're pledge was to scrap fuel tax altogether and replace by road pricing.?

At the end of the day oil companies keep the prices at the pumps artificially high.

Remember when there was the last major price hike when prices were increasing by the day and everyone was up in arms and fuel protests were planned again, they eventually kept people happy by the prices going down again BUT they never returned the the levels they were pre price hike even though the prices of crude oil had returned to the previous levels. Therefore they are artificially keeping prices high and we get used to paying the higher prices for fuel.

If you compare the prices we are paying at the pumps today with the price of crude, compared to the prices of crude to the prices at the pumps back in the last fuel price hike you will see the difference.

Back in May 2008 when crude reached record prices at $135 a barrel we were paying probably about the same prices at the pumps that we are paying now when crude prices are currently trading at around the $80 mark.

The oil companies always have some excuses as to the reason for the high prices at the pumps but to me it stinks of blatant profiteering.
  • I wonder how many people here moaning about oil/petrol companies have private (or even some company) pensions? If you do then I'd just like to remind you that your pension pot depends on these companies making a healthy profit.

Or do people, in true 21st century Britain style want to have their cake and eat it?

However, it should be pointed out that the vast majority of what you pay at the pump goes to the government. The oil companies get pennies per litre.

No they don't. It is not in their interests to do this and only a small proportion of their profits come from retail sales. Most of the cost of fuel is tax.

Want cheap fuel? Go and dig up your own oil and start refining it yourself.
