  • Spare a thought for those trying to get tax credits:

Anyone else old enough to remember the centralisation of licences and car tax at Swansea circa 1980?

Of course in those days the idea of several computer terminals in every public library was an expensive pipe dream; so the only methods available were post and telephone. Eventually local county offices had to be reopened to stop the car trade collapsing and to give people somewhere to go and queue in person.

There is an interesting programme running on BBC Radio 4 each morning:

It is extra interesting because it features retired officials and chancellors explaining from the inside why it is the shameful mess it is.

This morning's episode featured the current head honcho collector being all macho about tax avoidance - he must hate being ordered to grovel a bit in a press statement on Saturday evening.

( Origin: Japanese hanchō, squad leader)

I seem to remember Jacqui Smith sounding the same, when defending
the police seizing an MP's computer, - well we all know what happened to her illustrious career.

The honcho said it was a shame that so many clever people were making a living playing poacher to his gamekeeper; I feel it is a shame that, the level of tax take in our economy means that, an army of sometimes very clever people are playing these games on both sides. They could go and get themselves a useful job.

Listen here and make up your own minds.

As for me I now have learned that it is best to be paid in "platinum sponge" (now that sovereigns are worth more than a pound), the height of a safety boot (Tax 0%) and a safety shoe (Tax 20% next year) and the difference between a cake and a biscuit.

With no sense or irony the next programme was number 71 in the list of the worlds iconic items.
A Chinese bank note worth 3 kilos of copper cash - unfortunately it became valueless within a generation.
  • Your constant reference to UK callers is making me uncomfortable. You're right in that this forum probably isn't for me, I'll go somewhere with a bit more tolerance for others.

I couldn't agree more with your sentiment, us shirkers in the private sector should stop moaning about paying for these calls, how else are we to pay for the overpaid, overpensioned underworked public sector, and the poor unfortunate people who are having their benefits capped at a mere £25,000 a year, I personally count myself lucky to be in a job, and only wish I could donate more from my £15,000 a year salary to help them, aaaah, that feels better.

..use the international or agents line when you're not entitled to will result in HMRC asking you to use the normal 0845 number - hence wasting more of your time and taking up time that could be used to answer another call. Vicious circle.
