    Now, now people behave.

The reason people from abroad have a different number is that 0845 numbers cannot be dialled from abroad, so in that respect they are not jumping a queue.

Totally agree as I said in Post 15.

08 numbers simply route to normal geographic numbers and as they can't be accessed outside of the UK, HMRC has to provide a normal geographic number.

I was told yesterday that you can use the phones in the Job Centres to call the tax office, also re Working Tax Credits - someone I know just went in and sat down at one of the booths provided - had to hold on for nearly 20 mins but it didn't cost them a penny
  • Sorry to interrupt but I wouldn't mind paying if I actually got a reply.

    a) you need sandwiches, crisps an apple, flask of tea or coffee and the book you always wanted to read

    b) dial up I.R. put phone on loudspeeker within easy reach......and wait in comfort

  • A faxed message may be a resaonable alternative - if you look at the find a tax office/enquiry office on HMRC web site a fax number should be available. I am not a technophobe but it mat be possible to send a fax via a PC - or conventionally. Potentially costly but it saves waiting time. Contacting HMRC is getting to be an increasing hassle - a call to the complaints dept. may have an impact (easier to contact).
  • It still comes down to:
I can send a secure message to my bank - Why can I not send a similar message to my tax account?
My bank makes peanuts out of my account, when compared with the small fortune I pay on my tax account/NI number.

If you have a tax office in your local town try popping in there. My local office has a phone you can use to contact other offices and it's free of charge.
The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water
And I look like a tramp and tramps like us

    Good suggestion from Andy.

note it is far from unusual with the 0845 numbers to hold for up to 10 minutes and then be cut off because "sorry we are too busy getting everyone's tax codes wrong, please call back later ideally when Hell freezes over."

I think things would be very very different if these were 0800 numbers and it was their expense not yours.

You could write of course, and join the 13 week mail queue. You can also use recorded delivery mail, though HMRC have been known to deny receipt of these!

We need John McEnroe in this country to fill out a tax return and give them the kick up the pants he gave Wimbledon in the 1980s.
