Have you tried using the international number of the office you're trying to reach? Just drop the +44 and replace with 0.
It's not free but will be useful if you have inclusive calls.0 -
Have you looked on 'saynoto0870.com' for a number that would be a local call for you or if you have an inclusive package get a geographic number?0

I have been trying to contact them for weeks because of an error they have made. I only allow a maximum time of 20 minutes each time I ring and not once have I spoken to a human being regardless of time of day I call.
I appreciate that it's not the fault of the staff working there but HMRC are a complete nightmare and can only get worse with all of the restructuring.0 -
I have rung them before and remember not paying for the call, but memory tells me now that i rang them on a generic number
but after 6 o'clock at night and calls to 01 numbers are free (course its 7 o'clock now since Sky changed its times)
Thanks for your help guys.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

My partner had similar problems trying to contact her tax office in Leicester....after endless attempts she contacted the local Citizens Advice Bureau who told her that she should contact her local MP as this sort of this is a national problem. She did write to him via Houses of Parliament who,to give them their due,did contact her.She gave them details of her issue and the local tax office rang her a few days later0

When I phoned the number on my tax office notepaper, I got through to some call centre on the Western edge of the Lake District - a couple of hundred miles from my actual tax office.0

They are not there for people who're too cheap to pay for a damn phone call.0 -

I do pay for phone calls in my included call package.
What I object to paying is the higher costs associated with 0845/0870 numbers which generate revenue for the recipient - especially when it is taking so long to get an answer these days!
If HMRC and others can't provide geographic numbers for customer use, they force their customers into using other options.0
