My new Blackberry

I was thinking of getting an iPhone (men in white coats nearly on the way).

I think I'll stay with Blackberry http://experts.thelink.co.uk/2010/06/07/blackberry-bold-9800-slider-hands-on-photos/ and buy it sim free.

I think that this will work out quite expensive. The new Torch (sliding Blackberry) will be an expensive handset to buy sim free.

I think it may be best to buy an iPhone with a contract. (I have the 3GS and haven't looked back to the Blackberry I used to have)

Even still. The new Blackberry will work out much cheaper over 2 or 3 years with a contract.

I had an iPhone 3G and when my contract was up I brought a sim free BB Bold 9700. I had it for just over 2 months before I couldn't take anymore and got the iPhone 4.

Its not that the BB was a bad phone as such, its just that everything it does, the iPhone does so much better. Even the email on the BB (which I heard was meant to be really good) fell short of the iPhone and couldn't even handle IMAP.

I have read that the display is only a measly 360 x 480 which is a bit of a legacy resolution now when even the desire does 480 x 800 (still quite a bit less than the 640 x 960 on the ip4)
  • I use my phone for email and calls more than anything else, don't have music on it, don't browse the internet either.

I'm on a rolling monthly Simplicity with O2 @ £15pm 300 mins (which I don't use) unlimited texts, of which I use between 20-100pm and Blackberry unlimited.

I don't want to be tied into a long contract anymore. With contracts becoming longer buying the phone becomes more of an option. Some not all want the latest phone/gadget i.e. prime example the iPhone 4, and want to get out of their contract to get it.

I tried the Blackberry Storm 2 and couldn't get on with the touch screen. I have an iPod Touch and have the same problem. Maybe it's me and need time to get used to it. I did order an iPhone 4 but due to been away I couldn't get to collect it.
  • If you couldn't get on with the touchscreen on the Storm and don't like it on your iPod, why do you want to waste time getting another touchscreen BB, even if it does have a keyboard?

Let's face it; you're not going to use the touchscreen if you can use the keyboard. You mention that you want it for phone/email/text and you've got the iPod for music, so I don't know why you'd want to waste your money on something that does so much more than you need it to.

I'm hardly in a position to question you - I have a Windows Phone! It does everything I need it to - Sat Nav, phone, text, e-mail, web, music - it just doesn't do it very well. The OS is ok but not great. The interface is ok, but "clunky". The sat nav is TomTom, but it takes ages to get a fix. Texting is ok and e-mail is awkward. Web is so small and difficult to re-size without affecting the rest of the phone display that I just don't bother any more.

I'm gonna get an iPhone 4.

it's horses for courses, I got a BB bold 9700 about 4 weeks ago, and it is the best phone I have ever used, and thats coming form using windows mobile phones for the last years or so!! I did try the Iphone, but for me it did not cut it. The BB keyboard is great (far better then the mda vario III), the screen size and resolution is ample for my needs, I can surf the web pages I need with ease. The email is great, ok no Imap support, but thats no great big deal.

There are plenty enough free apps for my liking, which so far do everything I want to. It has a far better battery life then my MDA ever did, and that with leaving bluetooth and WiFi on all the time.

For me the BB beats the Iphone hands down, but that because it suits my personal needs, for others I am sure it's the reverse. I think the new BB looks great, a fantastic compromise of touch screen and keyboard, I will put money on it selling very well.

The phone has hardly been slashed in price, has it? Saying the price has been dropped to $99 from $550 is deliberately misleading. The offer clearly states that the price is subject to taking out a contract with AT&T. It could be just as easily said that the iPhone4 is so bad that all the UK networks are giving it away free: easy but misleading.

The Gizmodo article is more of a concern. Still, I will be looking at the 9800 come upgrade time. Equally, though, I will also be looking at the iPhone 4 and probably the Desire HD / Ace, too.

I've used Blackberries since 2007, but the 9700 I just got rid of was my last. This torch is a joke, a tweak to the OS and a new browser (that's still lacking according to reviews) isn't enough, i like the platform - but RIMs lack of investment in screens and processors mean that the Desire I've got now is such a leap. To hear that the Torch shares a lot of hardware with the 9700 is a real shame, RIM will lose high end consumers if they don't sort this, not all users are fanboys like the people you see on crackberry.com who will buy anything that RIM churn out. Compared to iP3GS/4 and many of the androids RIMs proposition isn't great for those who don't have to use them.

But don't forget that RIM's core users are businesses, and the fact that they give away the enterprise server express free, which is sufficient for many companies will keep them in the frame for a long time to come.

As a business you will purchase a device that fits the business needs not one that looks pretty or is the newest to the market - it is a different set of needs.

The Iphone and Android phones may well be better for the average consumer, but for businesses that need to implement a set standard then BB's are better - it would not matter which BB the business purchased they al connect with the enterprise server, so configuration is easy as is shared contacts etc. Doing that with an Iphone or Andraid would be nigh on impossible!!!

So I don't think you'll see the final nail in the coffin for quite some time yet with BB's!
