Possible speeding fine

I asked this elsewhere, but thought i'd ask in its own thread.

I think I might have been caught doing about 36 in a 30, should know in due course, but the problem is I didn't know I was in a 30 zone as I didn't see the sign, went back the way I came and discovered the sign hidden behind branches of trees and the sign had been twisted around so it wasn't facing me as I came to it, the problem is there was a sign on the other side of the road and a 30 on the road, but there is a junction opposite the sign that a couple of cars were turning at the time, this is an extremely busy road and I honestly didn't see the sign. What would be my chances of appealing this if it came to it ? I have images of the sign and road.

Take photographs as soon as possible.
A compliant system of street lighting may still cause problems. The signs alone are not a get out of goal card.

Okay if I get anything I will see what the guys on pepipoo can do - thanks :)

It was in the middle of the day Coblcris so street lighting will have no bearing on it I think

I'm no expert but I'd say you almost have a case because the street lighting lampposts are also obscured by the trees. The problem is the massive "30" painted onto the road surface which isn't exactly easy to miss.

It is easy to miss when you got a junction opposite the sign and cars turning into it and sitting on top of the the 30 sign, really I didn't see the sign at all , I am a person who keeps to speed limits on roads such as this, but this was my first time in that area and didn't know this road at all.

Well I was quite far away from the speed van I came over the brow of the hill, and he was sitting about 400 yards away, and I slowed down straight away as I only ever see these vans in 30 zones, still I will await them to write to me.

Its not about whether the street lights are on or not, its about their presence. If theres street lights there, you assume 30 if there is no other markings.
With the markings on the road, I'd be surprised if that was the first 30 sign you saw. Were there not countdown signs?

If there were cars turning right, how were you able to be exceeding the 30 MPH limit? The sign is at the junction. Therefore your doing 36 with 2 cars at the sign?

nah there were no signs like that, it was simply going from a 40 zone to a 30 zone, I noted after I passed the van that it went back to a 40 zone

The cars were turning right at that junction, half a mile further on down that road there was a speed van parked up on the other side of a brow of a hill, there were no other signs at all saying it was 30 after the sign, so I was travelling down a road I thought had a 40 speed limit on it

If you say that you didn't see all of those road markings/signs, then you may benefit from further driver training.

It is so obviously a 30 mph limit.
  • If your speedo was showing 36 you were probably doing about 34 which is below the 10%+2 guideline, so you could possibly be OK.

If you are the RK of the vehicle and haven't moved house or bought the vehicle recently you will know within 14 days. Anyway as I said if you do get a NIP post on Pepipoo, you will get help rather than sarcastic comments.
