Box room bedrooms?

Hi all,

We have a tiny box room, at work so cant measure but I know you cant fit a single bed in.

We have a 5 yr old who is in a toddler bed and needs a proper bed, what have other people done with box rooms.

Do I have to get a custom made one, that will cost a bomb.

The room has no storage either and I am so annoyed at myself as never thought of this when we were young and in love and bought the house!! Just bought it and forgot about the future

ANy help apreciated

Thanks lovelys

Firstly measure the room i know you can get 3/4 length beds and if you can find a cabin type bed you would be able to get away with minimal other furniture in the room. :-)

3/4 length high beds/cabin beds are a godsend in boxroom bedrooms - my niece is 10, is still perfectly comfy in her 3/4 high bed (its the only bed she's had since her cotbed so she must have had it since she was 4 or 5) and she has drawers, toys etc all under her bed. A toy net you can attach to the corner of the wall up high near the bed is a great idea too for keeping all your little ones soft toys stored.

If you can build a support yourself with storage underneath, then the IKEA mattress for their expanding beds might be a cheaper way to fit him into the room without spending hundreds on a custom fit cabin bed?

First of all measure the room. As long as there is 6'3" along one wall then it will fit a standard length single divan bed. A 2 drawer or a slide store divan will give quite a lot of storage space. You can also get small single beds, that are the same length (6'3") but are 2'6" wide.

Just remember that any bedstead, or cabin bed will actually have external dimensions greater than the mattress.

Forget Ikea, their quality is terrible (especially the mattresses).

My Mum got me a custom made one that fit in, and I don't remember it costing very much at all, maybe it's something you could look into at least.
  • Some places do 'short' beds, which are a good few inches shorter than a regular bed. I have one of these that is 2ft 6 wide in my box room. My mum uses it when she stays. She's 5ft 2, and quite happy sleeping in that bed. Think it was about £150

Most independent manufacturers will do divan beds made to length, but the OP doesn't know what space they have yet.

I know you can get 'shorty' bunks, and singles and the mattresses to fit.

I got the frame of my twins' bunks from ebay for £50, they still sell for £200 odd in shops. I just got the cheapy metal ones so they do squeak a lot, might be best to go for wood, I will be changing theirs for wood as soon as a cheap set come up.

Moral of the ramble: Search 'shorty child's bed' on ebay. I'm looking for one for DD1 with drawers and a wardrobe under as she has a tiny room too.

I personally would advise against a sliding door divan, I had one and it just got full of junk and didn't offer any real storage, I'd go for one with a little wardrobe etc. or even just the frame so your LO can have plastic toyboxes underneath that slide out and go back, and would be a lot easier for toy storage than a divan.

There's a website that do shorter beds with storage underneath called box room beds.
